St. Mary's Cathedral, Killarney

4.7
#4 of 18 in Historic Sites in Killarney
Architectural Building Religious Site
Admire the combination of architectural influences at St. Mary's Cathedral. This Gothic cathedral is partly designed after Ireland's medieval churches. The brown-and-gray stonework and three stained-glass lancet windows represent traditional Irish features added by local architects. Visit the church between services to inspect the fine work inside. Consider observing a service to fully appreciate the somber beauty of the chapel. • When we came out of the park and suddenly stood in front of the cathedral we thought was built only a couple of years ago. In fact it's old but renovated outstandingly.  more »
  • It is worth the time to go inside and take a look around. It is beautifully preserved and well cared for.  more »
  • I went to explore the town of Killarney. As new Strret long going West on the right. Big Cathedral and symbol of the city that was. Worship is just being on when I went, was a solemn atmosphere.

Where to stay in Killarney

Travelers visit Killarney for the national park surrounding it, and there are plenty of places to stay in town that capitalize on the natural beauty of the valley setting. Because of its popularity, Killarney has more hotel beds than any other town or city in Ireland other than Dublin. Stay at a hotel or hostel in the town's center near the bustling corner of Main Street and East Avenue Road, or find a place along the side streets off Main Street for easy access to tourist shops, local pubs, and restaurants. There are plenty of affordable bed and breakfasts or guesthouses just within walking distance from the center, or you can stay outside of town at a scenic farmhouse or luxurious resort.
