Brewery Food & Drink
Visit Ireland's oldest operating brewery on Smithwick's Experience Kilkenny. John Smithwick founded the company in 1710. He originally brewed the beer in St. Francis Abbey Brewery. As you tour the facilities, learn about Ireland's history of brewing and see where Smithwick's beer is made. On the same site, visit St. Francis Abbey, the 13th-century structure where monks brewed ale as far back as the 1300s. When you finish touring, you'll have a chance to taste Smithwick's red ale-style beer, originally brewed for the first Kilkenny Beer Festival. Make Smithwick's Experience Kilkenny a centerpiece of your Kilkenny vacation itinerary, and find what else is worth visiting using our Kilkenny trip itinerary planner.

  • We had just visited the Guinness Storehouse a few days earlier, and thought this might be a bit redundant, but we were wrong. Where Guinness is high tech, this tour took a more intimate approach. You ...  more »

  • So much fun! The talking monk was so cool, and the portraits that talk were hilarious. The internal family conversation was fun. Get the paddle of three beers for the couple euros more. Interesting hi...  more »

  • A great pit-stop in Kilkenny if you ever travel through it. Parking is right down the road. (Just have your car out by 6 p.m. lol
  • Very different brewery tour, goes much more into the history of the beer. It was so worth it to go through our tour guide was incredible and the option of a free pint or flight at the end was wonderful.
  • Best brew tour in Ireland! Our tour guide was great and everything was really well done! Guinness may have some great views but Smithwicks was a way better tour!
  • An amazing, slightly cheesy, Disney-esque experience. We had a ton of fun here and it was so much better than the Guiness tour. Highly recommended if you're in the area. The beer is also delicious.
  • Harry Potter inspired room was interesting but I cannot say the tour guide lady was very good at her job. Definitely will not come back.
