Smithwick's Experience Kilkenny, Kilkenny

4.5
Visit Ireland's oldest operating brewery on Smithwick's Experience Kilkenny. John Smithwick founded the company in 1710. He originally brewed the beer in St. Francis Abbey Brewery. As you tour the facilities, learn about Ireland's history of brewing and see where Smithwick's beer is made. On the same site, visit St. Francis Abbey, the 13th-century structure where monks brewed ale as far back as the 1300s. When you finish touring, you'll have a chance to taste Smithwick's red ale-style beer, originally brewed for the first Kilkenny Beer Festival. • I had no idea that Smithwicks was older than Guinness. This experience was fantastic and gave all the information you could want to know. Tours are approximately 15-20 people and last about an hour. C...  more »
  • I really enjoyed this tour. It took a perfect amount of time and gave a good explanation of the history of smithwicks. Our guide was very friendly and helpful if we had any questions. And the pint at ...  more »
  • Wonderful experience. The history of the brewery and the Smithwick family is very fascinating. Our tour guide, Simon, was VERY KNOWLEDGEABLE! and entertaining! Even if you don't like beer (yes, there ...  more »

  • We took the tour which is not cheap at the time 15 euros, but as a fan of the beer, it was well worth every penny. We had Kaylyn as a tour guide and it is a wonderful history lesson paired with the story of how they brew it. I especially enjoyed the modern technology used in this historic setting. It was really something to see and something that shouldn't be missed if in Kilkenny.
  • Once you've taken a brewery tour, there's little need to see another brewery - the process is similar in them all. What stands the Smithwick's tour apart is that while they do explain the process, the do a much better job of detailing their history - especially since they do not brew on the site any longer. If you are in town and need to grab a pint, do it by taking the tour - you get a pint at the end with your admission. Well worth the stop.
  • The brewery tours here are more about the deep history behind them rather than the process of brewing. This is what my wife and I were looking forward to so if you like history and beer the tour is great
  • Awesome experience! We had Ide as our guide and she was a fantastic speaker/teacher for the brand. Highly recommend!
  • Great tour! I recommend you buy the upgrade to try all 3 Ales, i aid only 3€ more and received 3 half pints off all flavours instead of 1 pint of 1 flavour. The tour guide was funny and the experience was great! This place is the pride of the town.
