Smithwick's Experience Kilkenny, Kilkenny
(4.5/5 based on 1,000+ reviews on the web)
Visit Ireland's oldest operating brewery on Smithwick's Experience Kilkenny. John Smithwick founded the company in 1710. He originally brewed the beer in St. Francis Abbey Brewery. As you tour the facilities, learn about Ireland's history of brewing and see where Smithwick's beer is made. On the same site, visit St. Francis Abbey, the 13th-century structure where monks brewed ale as far back as the 1300s. When you finish touring, you'll have a chance to taste Smithwick's red ale-style beer, originally brewed for the first Kilkenny Beer Festival. Make Smithwick's Experience Kilkenny a centerpiece of your Kilkenny vacation itinerary, and find what else is worth visiting using our Kilkenny trip itinerary planner.

  • This tour was a standard style beer tour with great beer tasting at the end. There is a lot of history that is part of the beer tour and it was interesting.
  • If you have the time and you didn't go visit the Guinness, it will be perfect. It's personal, my group was made of 10 people so you always hear the guide and see things. It's really nice to understand...  more »

  • This was an ok tour for people who are enthusiasts but felt more for people who aren't. There's a good amount of theatrics (talking portraits and phantom projections) to keep anyone interested. They also have some neat things for brew enthusiast like a hop smelling station and taste samples of wort. None of the tour goes through any actual production center though which was disappointing for me because they always smell so good.
  • Excellent tour, very detailed information. They delve into the history of Smithwick's and Ireland as well, which gives valuable background information. I recommend that you upgrade your ticket for the board tasting, being able to try all three of their brews.
  • This was a great tour. History meets beer. Guided tours which was so much better than Guinness in Dublin (plus the beer is better).
  • One of the best brewery tours I have had the privilege of attending. Simon was knowledgeable and genuinely enjoyed talking about the history of Smithwicks. Try the Pale Ale if you are from the States. It isnt an IPA on steroids, it is just perfect.
  • Really good tour. Our guide Cillian was brilliant and answered all questions. Nice to have a taste after the tour in the bar. Definitely recommend it.
