Smithwick's Experience Kilkenny, Kilkenny

4.5
Visit Ireland's oldest operating brewery on Smithwick's Experience Kilkenny. John Smithwick founded the company in 1710. He originally brewed the beer in St. Francis Abbey Brewery. As you tour the facilities, learn about Ireland's history of brewing and see where Smithwick's beer is made. On the same site, visit St. Francis Abbey, the 13th-century structure where monks brewed ale as far back as the 1300s. When you finish touring, you'll have a chance to taste Smithwick's red ale-style beer, originally brewed for the first Kilkenny Beer Festival. • This was a fun tour, nothing like the normal "how you make beer" brewery tour. It's a good story of how Smithwicks came into being, how to pronounce it (leave out the W or they'll know you're a touris...  more »

  • Fun and educational. Beers are nice and you get a full pint choosing 1 of 3 type beers at the end of the tour and relax in their pub area. Only negative for me was the group I was in they over filled so no seating and hard to see tour guide which diminished the experience some. Still worth a visit if you're in the area.
  • So, first off - we're definitely glad we did this tour. It's a great experience if you're in Kilkenny. Very informative with interesting insight into both the process and the history. Getting to taste the sweet wort along the way was an interesting step I've not had at other breweries. The only downside (for us anyway) is there's a lot of tacky multimedia footage. Just about every room you go through there's a video clip to sit and watch, which definitely adds a lot of unnecessary time. Our tour guide was so excellent and informative that I would have much preferred him to impart all that information instead of sitting through the tacky multimedia presentations. That said, that's a minor gripe and it's well worth it for the rest of the experience.
  • We've done several distillery/brewery tours in Ireland and this one is by far the best. Very well done, interactive and informative. Ide was a wonderful tour guide with a beautifully angelic voice. 10/10 would do again!
  • I love learning about the history of this brewery and those that made it happen through the centuries. Our guide was the best. I would go again, better than Guinness experience
  • We had read the reviews that it was a bit "Hollywood"and not the working brewery any more. But decided to go anyway. It was amazing. Much more than a brewery tour. Our guide was from a family that had worked at the brewery for generations. It more like a historic walking tour than just a brewery. Free pint at the end! I recommend it.
