Rothe House and Garden, Kilkenny

4.0
#1 of 7 in Museums in Kilkenny
Visit an important symbol of Killkenny's heritage at Rothe House and Garden, the only 17th-century merchant's house still standing in Ireland. Built between 1594 and 1610, the residence will give you a sense of Renaissance times as you wander through its three houses. The museum within hosts 2,500 original artifacts all related to Killkenny's history. Many of these are over 400 years old, and some date back to prehistoric times. Tours are self-guided, so take as much time to view the relics as you like. Afterward, stroll through the garden out back, which was recently constructed and emulates a typical 17th-century garden. If you have Killkenny roots, the Rothe House can help you trace your Irish genealogy. • Rothe House is well worth a visit, on arrival we were greeted very warmly and were advised that we could take an official tour, or could explore at our leisure, although we opted to look around oursel...  more »
  • The property is so well-cared for. My group of 4 ladies enjoyed touring the house and garden (though 1 of us struggled a bit with all the stairs). Even in the winter, the grounds were pretty and it wa...  more »

  • We had so much fun at this small museum. There is a surprising amount of varied artifacts in here - from 1913 dance cards to Viking swords, to trilobites, to medieval tidbits, to Bronze Age burials. The size of the collection on display is small, but the quality is amazing. Make time to visit this beautiful home!
  • You can tell it is run by small nonprofit. Displays are almost an afterthought. House is intersting. Be aware some stairs are barrow and steep. Also the ground is uneven, if you have mobility problems think twice about the tour. The gardens are the highlight of our visit
  • The last house of it's kind left in Ireland. Owned by a silk merchant and bullt in 1594. Lived there until the 1650's when they were dispossessed of all property and banished to the west of Ireland, following the siege of Kilkenny, led by Oliver Cromwell.
  • A house museum to understand the ancient times and the way of living of rich people. The garden is a hidden place... really amazing and well restored.
  • Beautiful house full of history. Loved the medieval kitchen and gardens
