Galway Bay, Galway

4.6
#2 of 12 in Nature in County Galway
Walk along the beaches of Galway Bay, one of the area's most picturesque spots just southwest of the city. You may recognize the name from a John Lennon tune--he is only one of many that have sung about this bay. Walk along the beaches, and if you catch them on a dry day, sit and enjoy the swans swimming in the area. Nearby is the Long Walk, a row of colourful houses that line the water. Cap off your time here with a pint of Guinness at a nearby pub, or hang around for nightlife if you're in the mood. I don't suppose you can see Galway and not see the bay. We had a nice walk along the waters edge. Fortunately we had unusually pleasant weather.  more »

Where to stay in Galway

Stay at the center of Ireland's "Most Irish City," Galway City, by booking a hotel or hostel near Eyre Square, from which all city sights are walkable. If you prefer accommodation with more character, stay at a charming guesthouse or bed and breakfast just outside of the center, or look for lodging in the city's Latin Quarter, a bohemian neighborhood lined with cafes, galleries, and pubs. If you want to explore Galway County, book accommodations in the city, since it's a tourism and transportation hub on the West Coast. If you prefer the quiet countryside, seek out small, family-owned guesthouses on the Aran Islands or a cottage on the Connemara Peninsula.
