Stepping into Ulysses Rare Books (formerly known as Cathach Books), an antiquarian bookshop in Dublin, where a friend on a recent trip through the city directed me, gives you a privileged literary perspective. Walking past shelves upon shelves of first editions, which eventually became seminal works, by authors such as W. B. Yeats, Flann O’Brien, James Joyce, Oscar Wilde, and Samuel Beckett, to name a few, is absolutely spellbinding. Ulysses Rare Books specialise in Irish literature, history, Children's classics and original maps, but the collection is not limited to great writers of yore; there are many contemporary works (also first editions) by authors such as Seamus Heaney and Roddy Doyle. It’s a family-run business, and atop the bookshelves is a charming mural running along the perimeter of the shop depicting writers and famous Dublin locales, including McDaids, a famous writers’ haunt and the setting for the opening of James Joyce’s story “Grace.”

  • This bookstore features many rare books. Yes, many are pricey, but many are rare or out of print editions. We were so happy we came upon this shop.  more »

  • Loved the selections of classic books they have. They also have maps. Books are a little pricey, but that's to be expected. Also, 5 Stars for the workers not talking to me once. I was left to browse in peace, just like I wanted. The space is a little small, and there isn't anywhere to sit and read. But that's ok.
  • Amazing little bookstore with many rare or uncommon books. Prices are reasonable for what you get
  • Wonderful bookstore I was served by a very nice woman who was very helpful. The prices seemed to be on the high side but then again they are rare books!
  • Time well spent browsing with great excitement. Staff are a delight and quite helpful. Some real gems here and many signed editions of works by Yeats, Joyce, Stephens and more.
  • Crammed with old books, loved looking at the children's books some of which I once owned, worth a visit if you're looking for something nostalgic.
