Create an itinerary including Irishtown Nature Park
Irishtown Nature Park is a small man-made park between Irishtown and Sandymount Strand in Dublin 4, Ireland that offers several kilometers of walking trails along the Poolbeg Peninsula.
DevelopmentThe park was devised during a building boom in the 1970s, where rubble and waste was dumped in its current location. The Sandymount and Merrion Residents Association suggested turning the waste dump into a nature reserve. During the 1980s, Dublin Corporation, along with local residents, developed the park and planted seeds, trees, and tall grasses.
Notable ReferencesDuring the Wood Quay build and excavation in the early 1980s, up to 30 lorry loads of potentially significant archaeological rubble were dumped in the original location of the nature park.
The nature park can be accessed in two locations. An offroad path located on the Beach Road, opposite Marine Drive, meanders across the edge of Sandymount Strand for 1.4 kilometers up to the park entrance. A second entrance is located on Pigeon House Road near the Poolbeg Generating Station.

  • There is a super walk out to the lighthouse. There are super views across the city - walked it early this morning (17/3) and while the sky looked dark the waves and wine were both incredibly calm...

  • It's a long walk to the lighthouse, but it's worth the it. Right in the middle of Dublin you can enjoy some nice views of nature and the bay, gather some beautiful shells or just relax.

  • This park is quite ok to visit if you live here and want to escape the city, have a walk on the trail of the beach, go running or walk your dog. But it's impossible to really enjoy the nature here, as the beautiful view and peacefulness is quite destroyed by the big factory that is here which also produces a lot of noise and stench!! Such a shame and I can't understand who could ever allow for a factory to be build on this site.
  • Nice walk from Sandymount around the bay. Lots of walkers about so plenty of activity. Decent path with only a couple of low inclines if you have a pram or someone in a wheelchair. Plenty of seating along the route.
  • An absolutely stunning place to walk and take in the views over Dublin Bay. This is now my favourite walking spot in Dublin
  • Very long walk but worthy.
  • I am giving only 2 stars because it does not look great at all, simply a very small stretch of greenery and bushes. And the smells of poo from the nearby sewage treatment plant are horrid. Not something you would expect from nature reserve. Only the views of the bay are making visiting this place worthwhile.
