Cahir Castle, County Tipperary

Standing on an island in the Suir River, Cahir Castle retains much of its structure and defense system, making it one of Ireland's best-preserved castles. Begin your tour with an audio-visual show that gives you an overview of the castle's history and architecture. The video is available in several languages. While the castle was restored in the 19th century, it retains its early design and much of the original material. Walk the walls of the keep and the stairs of the towers in the same way the castle's defenders did centuries ago. A small fee admits you to the museum for a self-guided tour, or join a guided tour group for additional insight into the castle's legends and history. Make Cahir Castle a centerpiece of your Cahir vacation itinerary, and find what else is worth visiting using our Cahir day trip tool .

  • as usual we couldn't visit it because they close in the early afternoon but also from outside is cute to see him. the castle is surrounded by a river where you can admire swans and ducks. In addition there is a nice Park behind.

  • We had a big day on the road on this day so we were here at 7 am in the morning so we went for a walk around the outside of the castle and took some photos. There was a river which went around part of...  more »

  • Now my view of this place is slightly tinted with emerald colored spectacles. My grandmother was born here and I had never been. I loved it and I got to meet my great Uncle. A small yet perfectly formed castle and restored to perfection. I am quite big so walking about the place brought it home how little people used to be. A great place to spend a couple of hours and drink in some history.
  • Nicely preserved, interesting castle. Tells you a lot about medieval times, how life & death, fighting, and defense are integral to people's lives. Good tour guide was a big plus.
  • Worth the detour if you are in the area, the castle is in a beautiful village and is well restored. You can still see a lot of the original structure and the decoration inside really gives you a good idea of what living in there would have been like.
  • We went there for a school tour, the guide was helpful and knew a lot and the castle was really fun to explore. Also has an extremely detailed model which is nice. Highly recommend visiting.
  • Great time. Very friendly staff at the entrance with a multilanguage choice of guide and flyers. Walking through the well maintained and clean rooms of the castle really gives you the sensation of how people used to live here in old times. Complete access to the top of the tower, the old banquet room and few others. All the rooms and major attractions had panels with informations and interactive explanations. We were there in February and they have heater in the main areas so it is not so cold inside during raining winter days. Really enjoyable.
