Cahir Castle, County Tipperary

Standing on an island in the Suir River, Cahir Castle retains much of its structure and defense system, making it one of Ireland's best-preserved castles. Begin your tour with an audio-visual show that gives you an overview of the castle's history and architecture. The video is available in several languages. While the castle was restored in the 19th century, it retains its early design and much of the original material. Walk the walls of the keep and the stairs of the towers in the same way the castle's defenders did centuries ago. A small fee admits you to the museum for a self-guided tour, or join a guided tour group for additional insight into the castle's legends and history. • We took a self-guided tour of the medieval castle. We enjoyed it and if you are in the area, it is a nice visit that doesn't take a lot of time to see.  more »
  • We took the self tour of the castle and were quite impressed with the condition that the castle is in for a 500 -600 year old castle. We were able to go into almost all of the castle, only a couple of...  more »
  • We didn't want to wait for a tour, but I wish we had. We caught a bit of one of the tours and the guide was fantastic. We still had a great time exploring the castle. Most of the buildings are open fo...  more »

  • Simply beautiful. I'm in the Inch field behind the castle. Enjoying the sound of the waterfall, birdsong and breeze in the trees. Some recalibrate style art and relaxing. The gees and ducks are here with their newborns too. Lovely way to wind down on a Friday evening.
  • This is one of our favourite spots we have visited it does provide a tour or you can walk around freely in the castle which we decide to. It is well maintained and staff are very helpful and willing to answer questions. We spent a good hour and a half in tye castle reading up on the history and exploring all the rooms and grounds.
  • The riverside cafe opposite is not as good as when it opened. Management have taken there eye off the ball and I do not appreciate cold food. The castle in interesting and good value, but the services available could possibly be added too
  • We only had a quick stop here but went into the castle. It was Stoney and rustic. There was an exhibition about medieval women. The grounds were fun to walk around with many different sculptures to photograph with. There were swans and ducks in the moat with people throwing them bread, not sure if they were supposed to but there was no sign otherwise. There were shops and restaurants on the same street.
  • Beautiful castle surrounded by many local shops (coffee shop, restaurant...). We went for a picnic in the park nearby. Highly recommended for a family day out. We also had a great walk by the river in the way to swiss cottage.
