Cahir Castle, County Tipperary

Standing on an island in the Suir River, Cahir Castle retains much of its structure and defense system, making it one of Ireland's best-preserved castles. Begin your tour with an audio-visual show that gives you an overview of the castle's history and architecture. The video is available in several languages. While the castle was restored in the 19th century, it retains its early design and much of the original material. Walk the walls of the keep and the stairs of the towers in the same way the castle's defenders did centuries ago. A small fee admits you to the museum for a self-guided tour, or join a guided tour group for additional insight into the castle's legends and history. • The Cahir Castle, built around the 13th century, was one of the largest in Ireland. While other castles were missing a roof or a wall, the Cahir Castle tour will take you up and down spiral staircases...  more »
  • We stopped off at cahir castle on our way from Cork to Dublin. There's a pay and display car park right beside the castle, I think you could book 2 hours at a time. There's a river running in front of...  more »
  • We planned on visiting the castle...it didn't disappoint. Instead of ho hum guides, we got to explore the castle and grounds on our own! It was very interesting and we enjoyed seeing the various rooms...  more »

  • A beautiful maintained castle demonstrating various updates through its history. A very good diorama and explanation of the siege of the castle. There are lots of rooms and passageways to explore and ponder. Lots of potential for picnic days and shows on the green lawn. Hopefully the castle becomes more interactive. A lot of the walls and steps are closed off to public access. Denying people the chance to look over the walls. Not very much artefacts to see inside.
  • Informational video at a cool Castle. We really liked the VERY NARROW stairs down underground and back up to the high tower overlooking the fishery. Castle has a moat. We also enjoyed walking the free grounds that have several neat wood sculptures like the sword in the Stone and giant shoes and trees with chairs carved in them. Parking is on site in a lot, but there is a fee.
  • As one of Ireland's largest and most in-tact castles, this is a great place to visit and take a trip back in history. We took the tour included in the price of admission and I would highly recommend it. Our guide was very knowledgeable and I learned quite a bit about the castle's history, as well as it's owners and life inside it's walls.
  • I visited the castle yesterday it's great to get the insight of the history and culture within your local town. The views of the town and surrounding area from the tower of the castle are fabulous.
  • Cahir Castle is one of the largest castles in Ireland, is sited on an island in the river Suir. It was built from 1142 by Conor O'Brien, Prince of Thomond. The castle is well preserved and has guided tours and audiovisual shows in multiple languages. In 1981 it was used as a location for a battle scene in the film Excalibur and more recently as a location for television series The Tudors.

Where to stay in Cashel

Backpackers often seek out the hostel in Cashel, while other visitors tend to opt for a traditional bed and breakfast. If you're looking for a place from which to explore the town's medieval castle grounds, opt for accommodations in the heart of the town itself. You'll find several old guesthouses in the historical city center, and some hotels in this area offer real architectural intrigue. You can also get in touch with your outdoorsy side by pitching a tent at one of the local campgrounds.
