Cahir Castle, County Tipperary
(4.6/5 based on 480+ reviews on the web)
Standing on an island in the Suir River, Cahir Castle retains much of its structure and defense system, making it one of Ireland's best-preserved castles. Begin your tour with an audio-visual show that gives you an overview of the castle's history and architecture. The video is available in several languages. While the castle was restored in the 19th century, it retains its early design and much of the original material. Walk the walls of the keep and the stairs of the towers in the same way the castle's defenders did centuries ago. A small fee admits you to the museum for a self-guided tour, or join a guided tour group for additional insight into the castle's legends and history. • This is one of the best castle visits in Ireland. We did it as part of a Heritage three day tour of sites in the southeast. Our tour guide at Cahir Castle was excellent- both informative and entertain...  more »
  • This castle is easy to find, not far off the main roads heading southward. The castle costs very little to tour, is an easy walk, takes less than an hour to tour and is a great example of an historic ...  more »
  • Beautifully preserved Castle, which even as a film set (Tristan and Isolde, Excalibur) held here has. It is located in a fantastic location on a rocky island in the river Suir. In the Castle you will find among others a large diorama of the siege of 1599. Also the surrounding gardens are well worth a visit.

  • No signs pointing the correct way means we wasted time walking around the wrong way and it actually closes at 4:45 pm not 6:30 as Google claims. Got to the correct entrance at 4:50 and they wouldn't let us in. So worthless. Also there's a parking charge separate from admission. Complete waste of time.
  • Small but well preserved and picturesque castle, right in the centre of town. More than worth the small entry fee.
  • Barren on the inside with nothing to really see. If you want a good castle with great history, Rock of Cashel is the way to go! Besides that, if you have difficulty with stairs, don't dream of making it up the towers!
  • A beautiful castle in Cahir, free entrance on Wednesdays. Thrilling place to tour and really well looked after. Not much in the actual castle but absolutely incredible to view and the grounds are just stunning.
  • Great castle. Self tour. Restored and great views.
