Cahir Castle, County Tipperary

(500+ reviews on the web)
Castle
Standing on an island in the Suir River, Cahir Castle retains much of its structure and defense system, making it one of Ireland's best-preserved castles. Begin your tour with an audio-visual show that gives you an overview of the castle's history and architecture. The video is available in several languages. While the castle was restored in the 19th century, it retains its early design and much of the original material. Walk the walls of the keep and the stairs of the towers in the same way the castle's defenders did centuries ago. A small fee admits you to the museum for a self-guided tour, or join a guided tour group for additional insight into the castle's legends and history. • Cahir Castle is a terrific example of a castle with moat, portcullis, massive walls, turret and a dungeon located right smack in the middle of the town of Cahir. It feels more like what you think of a...  more »
  • I love castles and this is one of my favourites. Beautiful, well organised, plenty of history to learn. I was lucky to visit when there was almost no one else around which made it even more special. R...  more »
  • Very nice but I had been told how more realistic of the rock of Cashel. Maybe it's true but it doesn't change the fact that it is still too bare, undervalued and poorly managed. It all sounds left a little to chance.

  • No signs pointing the correct way means we wasted time walking around the wrong way and it actually closes at 4:45 pm not 6:30 as Google claims. Got to the correct entrance at 4:50 and they wouldn't let us in. So worthless. Also there's a parking charge separate from admission. Complete waste of time.
  • Small but well preserved and picturesque castle, right in the centre of town. More than worth the small entry fee.
  • Barren on the inside with nothing to really see. If you want a good castle with great history, Rock of Cashel is the way to go! Besides that, if you have difficulty with stairs, don't dream of making it up the towers!
  • A beautiful castle in Cahir, free entrance on Wednesdays. Thrilling place to tour and really well looked after. Not much in the actual castle but absolutely incredible to view and the grounds are just stunning.
  • Great castle. Self tour. Restored and great views.
