Cahir Castle, County Tipperary

#2 of 69 in Things to do in County Tipperary
Castle Tourist Spot
Standing on an island in the Suir River, Cahir Castle retains much of its structure and defense system, making it one of Ireland's best-preserved castles. Begin your tour with an audio-visual show that gives you an overview of the castle's history and architecture. The video is available in several languages. While the castle was restored in the 19th century, it retains its early design and much of the original material. Walk the walls of the keep and the stairs of the towers in the same way the castle's defenders did centuries ago. A small fee admits you to the museum for a self-guided tour, or join a guided tour group for additional insight into the castle's legends and history. Choose to start, finish, or center your holiday on a trip to Cahir Castle by using our Cahir travel itinerary planner.

  • I've seen castles before, but this was a good one to stop at. You can wander around yourself or do the tour with the guide for the same reasonable price. We checked out a few things before and after, ...  more »
  • Excellent castle to visit, the kids enjoyed walking through the rooms and spiral stairs to explore the castle. The castle is well maintained and so the rooms have character. You can take a walk to the...  more »
  • Built on the banks of the river Suir, this medieval castle is one of the largest in Ireland, or at least it was a thousand years ago. Also what remains today, with its walls along the river and the moat, the great portal, the inner walls, cannons, the great Tower, the ballroom for banquets with beamed ceiling and big game trophies, backyards with dwellings of the Butler Earls of Ormond when it passed in succession. Besieged twice until the seventeenth century, surrendered to Cromwell's troops during the English invasion. A true symbol of history.

  • Fantastic place for a visit! A truly beautiful castle which scenic views from all the windows. You are freely allowed to roam around the place but they also offer guided tours. They have a stunning miniature setup in one of the galleries. The grounds outside are beyond beautiful with an abundance of wildlife. Be warned you must bring something to offer to the ducks and geese, it is encouraged to feed them, as written on a sign. We spend a lovely time outside the castle in the grounds which have well kept land and paths. A bridge that allows you to cross the moat into the park. There is a wild flower area and another that encourages wildlife in safe areas. Truly a great place to visit!
  • This is one of the best castles to visit while in Ireland (along with Blarney). The cost is very reasonable, the castle itself is big enough and you get to explore all the rooms. It has artifacts, on display which makes it even more interesting and fun to visit.
  • Most beautiful castle I've seen in my 3 visits to the country. My cousin who lives in Limerick says it's her favorite as well. Both kid and adult friendly!
  • Slightly off the beaten track so no crowds and an intact example of an old Castle. I was delighted to have found it by chance.
  • Great castle!! Very busy during tourist season but it's completely intact with great your guides which were very knowledgeable
