Cahir Castle, County Tipperary

Standing on an island in the Suir River, Cahir Castle retains much of its structure and defense system, making it one of Ireland's best-preserved castles. Begin your tour with an audio-visual show that gives you an overview of the castle's history and architecture. The video is available in several languages. While the castle was restored in the 19th century, it retains its early design and much of the original material. Walk the walls of the keep and the stairs of the towers in the same way the castle's defenders did centuries ago. A small fee admits you to the museum for a self-guided tour, or join a guided tour group for additional insight into the castle's legends and history. The Cahir Castle, built around the 13th century, was one of the largest in Ireland. While other castles were missing a roof or a wall, the Cahir Castle tour will take you up and down spiral staircases...  more »

We stopped off at cahir castle on our way from Cork to Dublin. There's a pay and display car park right beside the castle, I think you could book 2 hours at a time. There's a river running in front of...  more »

We planned on visiting the castle...it didn't disappoint. Instead of ho hum guides, we got to explore the castle and grounds on our own! It was very interesting and we enjoyed seeing the various rooms...  more »

Fantastic place for a visit! A truly beautiful castle which scenic views from all the windows. You are freely allowed to roam around the place but they also offer guided tours. They have a stunning miniature setup in one of the galleries. The grounds outside are beyond beautiful with an abundance of wildlife. Be warned you must bring something to offer to the ducks and geese, it is encouraged to feed them, as written on a sign. We spend a lovely time outside the castle in the grounds which have well kept land and paths. A bridge that allows you to cross the moat into the park. There is a wild flower area and another that encourages wildlife in safe areas. Truly a great place to visit!

This is one of the best castles to visit while in Ireland (along with Blarney). The cost is very reasonable, the castle itself is big enough and you get to explore all the rooms. It has artifacts, on display which makes it even more interesting and fun to visit.

Most beautiful castle I've seen in my 3 visits to the country. My cousin who lives in Limerick says it's her favorite as well. Both kid and adult friendly!

Slightly off the beaten track so no crowds and an intact example of an old Castle. I was delighted to have found it by chance.
