Ballintubber Abbey, County Mayo

Ballintubber Abbey is an abbey two kilometres northeast of the village of Ballintubber, County Mayo in Ireland that was founded by King Cathal Crobdearg Ua Conchobair in 1216. It is said to be the only church in Ireland founded by an Irish king that is still in regular use.Despite being suppressed and damaged during the Protestant Reformation, the roofless abbey continued to be used throughout penal times by Catholics. In 1966, the nave was restored and re-roofed in time for the 750th anniversary of the abbey's foundation and, in 1997, the Chapter House and Dorter area were restored and re-roofed. In 2016, during the 800th anniversary celebrations, planning permission to restore the entire east wing was granted. The abbey has several modern outdoor attractions, including a very modern abstract Way of the Cross, an underground permanent Crib, and a Rosary Way. There is a small museum. According to the Ballintubber website, Seán na Sagart, the infamous priest-hunter, is buried in the cemetery. A large tree marks the spot. The abbey marks the beginning of Tochar Phádraig, the ancient pilgrimage route to Croagh Patrick, long defunct but now reopened as a cross-country pilgrimage and tourist trail.Other burialsTibbot ne Long Bourke, 1st Viscount Mayo

  • South of Castlebar, on the N84 is located a small Abbey perfectly renovated with a nave to the beautiful inner wood frame, a small cemetery and a well-kept garden. The tour is free, freedom of everyone to make an offering or not. Small also free parking nearby. The place is very quickly but offers a quiet and conducive to relaxation serenity... before continuing his tour of discoveries continue for example by the monastery of Clonmacnoise.

  • Beautiful simple Abbey, enjoyed our time here. Lovely walk around the Abbey. Steeped in history. Very spiritual experience. Lovely adoration chapel to spend quiet reflection time with the Lord. Was a wedding there , so beautiful a setting. No down side
  • Lovely place of great historic import. Serene and contemplative.
  • Steeped in history. Beautiful grounds and perfect acoustics. 801 years in constant use as a Catholic Church having survived the famine and all the wars when Churches were burned all over the country
  • Very beautiful, wondrous history, warm and welcoming.
  • Steeped in history that appeals to ones Celtic roots as well as ones Catholic Heritage, the abbey remains a fully functional church, offering daily and weekend masses, feast celebrations, and a Passion Play on the grounds during Holy Week.
