Skellig Michael, County Kerry

(4.7/5 based on 480+ reviews on the web)
Visit Skellig Michael, the larger of the two Skillig Islands, to see the natural beauty and the famous ruins of early religious settlement. The remains of the historic monastery, along with much of the Atlantic Ocean island, were named a World Heritage Site in 1996. The monastery was established on the island between the 6th and 8th century, but was abandoned in the 12th century. Take a tour of the island, weather permitting. If you like to dive, take advantage of one of the dive sites. Use our Portmagee itinerary planner to arrange your visit to Skellig Michael and other attractions in Portmagee.

  • On the way out you pass Skellig Beag which holds a colony of birds (which I cannot remember the name of!) and they cover the entire island, our boat circled it a couple of times. Then you head to skel...  more »

  • Gorgeous views and some truly impressive ancient structures. A tough boat ride over, depending on the weather, but well worth it. Beautiful enough from the top for them to film a movie scene from!
  • UNESCO and most spectacular tourist site in Ireland. The boat trip is an adventure never to forget
  • Nothing like it anywhere else on the planet, remote and difficult to get to. A very special place full of atmosphere and dramatic tranquility.
  • Not to be missed! Walking in the footsteps of the monks who lived here is well worth the time in the boat to get there. Loads of Puffin (and tens of thousands of birds visible on nearby Small Skellig).
  • Amazing place! Well worth a visit, boat can be choppy though!
