Ardgillan Castle and Demesne, County Dublin

The park consists of 194 acres of rolling open grassland, mixed woodland and gardens, overlooking the Irish Sea with views of Mourne Mountains to the north and Lambay to the south-east. Ardgillan is a sanctuary for many species of animals, mammals and birds for which the wooded areas provide a safe retreat from surrounding agricultural land.

The gardens are in three main parts, the formal Rose Garden and the Potentilla collection to the west of the castle, and the walled garden to the north-west which contains herb, vegetable, fruit, and ornamental sections.

The state-of-the-art playground was opened in 2006 and has over 30 pieces of play equipment to enjoy from cradle swings for the very young to a large climbing space net for older children (under 12).

  • Love this place! You can go for a long or a short walk, with your dog, kids, a wheelchair,... There is parking on top of the hill and next to the castle (only for wheelchair users). You will also find a nice rose garden and a coffee shop (dog friendly) as well as a huge playground. The further you walk down the hill (behind the castle) the more secluded it gets. In the recent year a fairly trail was also added.
  • Amazing gardens and beautiful castle. It worth a stroll in the woods and in the fields around the castle. The walled garden is wonderful. It's a pity that without a car is difficult to get there both from Balbriggan and Skerries. The only bus that stops near the castle is the 33.
  • Possibly the best parkland in Dublin. Great place to stroll with lots of lovely views. Terrific playground for the children. There are lots of activities at certain times. Recently (March 2017) it became compulsory to.keep your dog on a leash. Pity, as it was the ideal.place to exercise your pooch. There is, however, a dog-friendly cafe, Paws. A guided tour of the castle is worthwhile.
  • Magnificent grounds. Really well kept. There is a dog friendly cafe, play grounds, hike trails and access to the beach. A great day out!
  • Ardgillan Castle is one of my favourite places to go whether with or without our chocolate labrador. The roses were in full bloom last weekend, this place is peace on earth :-)
