  • This is not only a touching tribute to those who perished, but it is in the middle of a picturesque square full of flowers and lovely scenery.  more »
  • Hard not to miss the memorial. Should read the description of the memorial and survivors of the Lusitania that were brought to Cobh.  more »
  • Monument to peace inaugurated in 1968 (a few years after the death of the Irish-American sculptor Jerome Connor (1874-1943) responsible for his execution) to commemorate the sinking of the RMS Lusitania. 1959 passengers from New York to Liverpool, the Lusitania was hit by a torpedo on 7 May 1915, launched by a German U-Boat 20 off the coast of Cobh. The boat sank in just 18 minutes. Thus, some 1198 on the 1959 passengers on Board (men, women and children) perished during this sad sinking; others (761) having been rescued by fishermen from Cobh. Several victims of the shipwreck whose bodies were rescued by residents of Cobh were buried at the cemetery of the Old Church of Cobh. The sculptor who designed the work to the command of a descendant of one of the victims of the shipwreck is enthroned the Angel of peace at the top of the monument and two fishermen of Cobh to his feet as a tribute to the dedication of the people of Cobh during this event. A Gaelic inscription "Siochain in Ainm of" which means "Peace in God's name" is a vibrant testimony for peace and against the war on the part of a people who too often suffered. To learn more about this drama, visit the Cobh Heritage Centre, which provided one of the themes.

  • Sort of a forgotten episode in history. The Titanic seems to take all the attention, and WWI is the forgotten war. It even took to 1970 to complete this statue. It would be nice to see more Lusitania history, but this is a nice memorial.
  • It's an important memorial but was lost in all the other things going on in Cobh. I didn't see a signpost from the seafront whereas the statue to Sonia O'Sullivan was very prominent.
  • Fitting memorial.....
  • Great experience
