  • A must-have very little mentioned in the guides first a splendid walk in bogs and then a great initiation of this was the 1st station of transatlantic transmission (Marconi) and finally it was the landing site of Alcock and Brown that was the 1st flight between the USA and Europe

  • An easy place to walk around as there is a tar path, good for small children. Nice views of the 12 bens. There are also some food stands if you want a snack before or after.  more »
  • The thought that this was less than a 100 years ago is startling when overhead 7 miles high you can see a big Airbus dfoing 600 miles an hour...  more »

  • Very interesting loop walk, 1 hour walking, 2 hours if stopping at the points of interest. Great history lesson, I had no knowledge of the Marconi station before visiting here.
  • The most pictures here are not taken at the landing place. The are from a place nearby, the Marconi Radio Station. Also a important historic place. I made a new point on Google Maps and placed some picture as well.
  • A must for a) radio amateurs, and b) aviators :-) Interesting site in a beautiful landscape! 73, HB9DHT
  • It’s in a field full of animal poop so expect flies, but it’s a nice monument and well worth the visit.
  • Fascinating experience, well worth it, but it does take a couple of hours.

Where to stay in Clifden

The authentic charms of Clifden are best experienced while staying in the center of this seaside town. Here you will find several places to spend the night, from upscale hotels to quaint bed and breakfasts. For a more typical Irish experience, opt for the latter. Backpackers generally head for the town's hostels, while travelers with a larger budget often stay at the 19th-century castle-turned-hotel. If price is not a concern, look into renting a traditional Irish home.
