4.1/5 based on 440+ reviews on the web
Tour eight exhibits detailing the history of Athlone Castle, a castle built by King John of England in 1210. This massive, 11th-century structure on the banks of the River Shannon replaced the 1129 timber fort that originally stood here. It was rebuilt using stone in 1210 as a strong, defensive fortress for the king. After protecting the town of Athlone for 750 years, this castle became a museum in 1966 and is run by the Old Athlone Society. Explore this renovated structure and its keep, which is a national monument, as well as its eight interactive galleries depicting this building's epic story. • There was a lot of activities for kids to do. Very informative. I loved that kids could try on clothes off a different era.
  • The playground of my childhood has been turned into a rather excellent regional attraction / museum. There are plenty of hands on exhibits to keep the kids interested. I especially liked the very artistic figured of important personages from the Siege of Athlone.
