Athlone Castle, Athlone
Categories: Castles, Tourist Spots
Tour eight exhibits detailing the history of Athlone Castle, a castle built by King John of England in 1210. This massive, 11th-century structure on the banks of the River Shannon replaced the 1129 timber fort that originally stood here. It was rebuilt using stone in 1210 as a strong, defensive fortress for the king. After protecting the town of Athlone for 750 years, this castle became a museum in 1966 and is run by the Old Athlone Society. Explore this renovated structure and its keep, which is a national monument, as well as its eight interactive galleries depicting this building's epic story. Using our custom trip planner, Athlone attractions like Athlone Castle can form part of a personalized travel itinerary.

There was a lot of activities for kids to do. Very informative. I loved that kids could try on clothes off a different era.
The playground of my childhood has been turned into a rather excellent regional attraction / museum. There are plenty of hands on exhibits to keep the kids interested. I especially liked the very artistic figured of important personages from the Siege of Athlone.
Well worth a visit If you're in the area. Right in the town and very accessible. It doesn't tale long to explore and lovely views.
Can get some nice views from the top. Worth checking out if you have some spare time.
Great views of Athlone, giant chess is good fun. Great job on the refurbishment and very informative
