  • the guided tour is worth every penny as you learn so much history. however, if its raining you will get wet as there really is not any cover. about 1 hour  more »
  • This castle was built by the o'donovans, and afterwards came into possession of Kildare. Located on the North Bank of the Maigue River, a river flowing mainly between the counties of Kork and Limerick. It is an impressive Norman castle in ruins that underwent various vicissitudes before being destroyed by the soldiers of Cromwell in 1657. There are guided tours, it's all interesting, even for the river that flows near and around their surroundings.

  • Although our group did not have time to spend touring the castle, we were easily able to view the castle from the bridge. The ruins appear to be in fairly good shape and you can sign up for a tour of ...  more »

  • It rained ALL DAY when we visited, although the tour was great, it would have been much more enjoyable if the weather was a bit better as the Castle is completely open and there's not a lot of cover from the elements. You can only go on a guided tour (tickets purchased from the information centre), which we preferred as we got a great history lesson of the town and the castle. Our tour guide (Evan) was very informative and energetic throughout the tour. If you visit Adare, make sure you check out Desmond Castle. The Adare Manor was under construction (late Sept 2017), but if it's open when you visit, add it to your list!
  • Completely agree with Sarah. Excellent, low key, informative tour through hundreds of years of Irish history, as seen through the story of one ruined castle. Tour takes an hour, a five minute shuttle bus hop from the heritage centre, with no more than 18 going at a time. Our guide, Vera, was charming and well-informed, very careful to separate fact from legend.
  • Well worth the visit.
  • Beautiful castle with great history. Tours available.
  • We enjoyed this tour when we were in Ireland. Our tour guide was also very knowledgeable.
