Keem Bay, Achill Island

Escape the bustle of travel with a visit to Keem Bay, considered one of the most beautiful places in all of Ireland. Once the site of a basking shark fishery, the bay now serves as a great snorkeling spot with a Blue Flag beach--meaning it has met strict standards for water quality, safety, environmental education, and information. Historical and natural landmarks surround the bay itself, including an old British army lookout, a booley village (used in the summer to house young family members who bring their cattle to graze on the hillside), and Europe's highest cliffs in Croaghaun. There is little for food or drinks to purchase here, so consider bringing your own. • Few places like this are left as our Earth becomes more crowded. Many of the beautiful places are too remote to visit. While remote, Keem Bay is a place you can, and most certainly should, visit! Tuck...  more »
  • Keem Bay is worthwhile in any case. The way a little adventure. The road is always close but awesome views.

  • The ride on Achill Island to Keem Bay is already beautiful, especially the last part. When we were here it was pretty cloudy, but that also gave a special atmosphere. It is a beautiful place on the extreme point. Scenic views. Special!

  • One of the most beautiful beaches you possibly can see in Ireland. The driveway up the mountain is breathtaking, it has an amazing scenery just take care of SHEEP when you are driving up. The road is narrow & they are every where. Also, the beach is kid friendly.
  • I was stunned... The views are breathtaking... A quiet beach that is very clean... And dolphins were a bonus... They came so close that people could swim with them. When the weather is like the one I got you cannot go wrong with Keem Bay being your destination.
  • This is one of the most beautiful places you will find in Ireland. Beaches are good for small kids. Plan in advance and stay overnight if possible. There is kayaking and snorkeling.
  • The final few kilometres of road is windy and needs to be taken at an appropriate speed; it is, however, a will maintained road wide enough for traffic to pass on both directions. The road end at a car park from which one can access the beach (the is s ramp to facilitate wheelchair access). The scenery is spectacular, the beach small but delightful. On my visit, a basking shark came very close to shore - they run their bellies on the sand to free themselves from parasites.
  • An amazing place to visit, possibly Ireland's most photogenic beach. Dolphins & Basking Sharks often swim in this bay. Derek Davidson Tour Guide & Trekker at Walk West Ireland 🇮🇪.
