Keem Bay, Achill Island

Escape the bustle of travel with a visit to Keem Bay, considered one of the most beautiful places in all of Ireland. Once the site of a basking shark fishery, the bay now serves as a great snorkeling spot with a Blue Flag beach--meaning it has met strict standards for water quality, safety, environmental education, and information. Historical and natural landmarks surround the bay itself, including an old British army lookout, a booley village (used in the summer to house young family members who bring their cattle to graze on the hillside), and Europe's highest cliffs in Croaghaun. There is little for food or drinks to purchase here, so consider bringing your own. • Bit of a harrowing drive along cliff face but well worth it. Secluded cove but would be very popular in summer I imagine. Has a lifeguard station, again only for use in summer I imagine.  more »
  • The drive to keen bay from Westport takes about an hour or so wild Atlantic way beautiful beach and stunning scenery my advice would be take care of you when coaches either come up or down the road in...  more »
  • The bay is beautiful and somewhat secluded. We were there in the Fall, so just walked on the beach. Would love to go back in the summer, though. Achille is a lovely, peaceful place.  more »

  • The final few kilometres of road is windy and needs to be taken at an appropriate speed; it is, however, a will maintained road wide enough for traffic to pass on both directions. The road end at a car park from which one can access the beach (the is s ramp to facilitate wheelchair access). The scenery is spectacular, the beach small but delightful. On my visit, a basking shark came very close to shore - they run their bellies on the sand to free themselves from parasites.
  • Magnificent view of Keem bay. I would recommend to visit this place who have the opportunity
  • Breathtaking! Friends of mine had told me that this place was beautiful and I must say we were all blown away! The drive up is amazing! You are almost driving through the clouds and well worth the fear of the cliff! This is a must see if you are staying anywhere close enough!!!
  • Clear weather, white sand...just remember to bring some beer and have fun!
  • The place where I would wish to die - amazing scenery
