Keem Bay, Achill Island

Water Body
Escape the bustle of travel with a visit to Keem Bay, considered one of the most beautiful places in all of Ireland. Once the site of a basking shark fishery, the bay now serves as a great snorkeling spot with a Blue Flag beach--meaning it has met strict standards for water quality, safety, environmental education, and information. Historical and natural landmarks surround the bay itself, including an old British army lookout, a booley village (used in the summer to house young family members who bring their cattle to graze on the hillside), and Europe's highest cliffs in Croaghaun. There is little for food or drinks to purchase here, so consider bringing your own. To visit Keem Bay and other attractions in Achill Island, use our Achill Island itinerary builder.

  • Very nice beach in a small bay surrounded by hills.
  • The beach though rather small boasts amazing views of Europe's tallest sea cliffs, which can be accessed from the beach. The climb is tough but the views are worth it. The waters off the beach are clear blue/green and the sand soft. It is the Atlantic ocean though so bring a wetsuit! There is a tea/coffee stand in the lower carpark (there are two). Even the drive over to this beach has some amazing views, just mind the sheep on the road, they have right of way.
  • A very nice place to stay. You can either stay at the beach or walk up the cliffs (1 hour steep on small track through the meadows). From the cliffs you have a great panoramic view. Note that the car park is very small.
  • One of the most beautiful beaches in Ireland. Clear crystal water, sandy golden beach in a cove surrounded by high cliffs. Excellent for swimming, snorkeling. Rock pools for everyone to explore.
  • One of the most scenic beaches I have ever seen! Absolutely beautiful and well worth a visit. Views are spectacular.
