Keem Bay, Achill Island

Escape the bustle of travel with a visit to Keem Bay, considered one of the most beautiful places in all of Ireland. Once the site of a basking shark fishery, the bay now serves as a great snorkeling spot with a Blue Flag beach--meaning it has met strict standards for water quality, safety, environmental education, and information. Historical and natural landmarks surround the bay itself, including an old British army lookout, a booley village (used in the summer to house young family members who bring their cattle to graze on the hillside), and Europe's highest cliffs in Croaghaun. There is little for food or drinks to purchase here, so consider bringing your own. • Bit of a harrowing drive along cliff face but well worth it. Secluded cove but would be very popular in summer I imagine. Has a lifeguard station, again only for use in summer I imagine.  more »

  • The bay is beautiful and somewhat secluded. We were there in the Fall, so just walked on the beach. Would love to go back in the summer, though. Achille is a lovely, peaceful place.  more »

  • One of the most beautiful beaches you possibly can see in Ireland. The driveway up the mountain is breathtaking, it has an amazing scenery just take care of SHEEP when you are driving up. The road is narrow & they are every where. Also, the beach is kid friendly.
  • I was stunned... The views are breathtaking... A quiet beach that is very clean... And dolphins were a bonus... They came so close that people could swim with them. When the weather is like the one I got you cannot go wrong with Keem Bay being your destination.
  • This is one of the most beautiful places you will find in Ireland. Beaches are good for small kids. Plan in advance and stay overnight if possible. There is kayaking and snorkeling.
  • The final few kilometres of road is windy and needs to be taken at an appropriate speed; it is, however, a will maintained road wide enough for traffic to pass on both directions. The road end at a car park from which one can access the beach (the is s ramp to facilitate wheelchair access). The scenery is spectacular, the beach small but delightful. On my visit, a basking shark came very close to shore - they run their bellies on the sand to free themselves from parasites.
  • An amazing place to visit, possibly Ireland's most photogenic beach. Dolphins & Basking Sharks often swim in this bay. Derek Davidson Tour Guide & Trekker at Walk West Ireland 🇮🇪.
