Keem Bay, Achill Island

Escape the bustle of travel with a visit to Keem Bay, considered one of the most beautiful places in all of Ireland. Once the site of a basking shark fishery, the bay now serves as a great snorkeling spot with a Blue Flag beach--meaning it has met strict standards for water quality, safety, environmental education, and information. Historical and natural landmarks surround the bay itself, including an old British army lookout, a booley village (used in the summer to house young family members who bring their cattle to graze on the hillside), and Europe's highest cliffs in Croaghaun. There is little for food or drinks to purchase here, so consider bringing your own. • One of my favourite places in Ireland - a magnificent drive to an isolated beach which is simply stunning. I’m told there used to be basking sharks just offshore - I haven’t seen them yet but I live i...  more »

  • Breathtaking! Friends of mine had told me that this place was beautiful and I must say we were all blown away! The drive up is amazing! You are almost driving through the clouds and well worth the fear of the cliff! This is a must see if you are staying anywhere close enough!!!
  • It is incredible place. Mountains on both sides. Beauty and perfectness in evrry piece. Waves... eating mountain river water. Stones to walk and jump on them. Place to enjoying life!
  • This little beach is at the end of the road on Achill. Nice cliff road with great views out to the Atlantic to get over to get here. Apart from the local guy selling great coffee out of the back of a van I had the place to myself. Think it's my new favourite place in Ireland now.
  • I LOVED Keem Bay beach. I just wished it was warmer so I could get in with those waves. Some people braved the cold without a wetsuit but only lasted about a minute. Stunning landscape.
  • Stunning. ..drive through the gate if you don't fancy a 20 minute walk to the top. And the parking at the top can be tight...well worth it though. Not as scenic as Keem Bay on Achill Island though and much busier
