Sami Abdulrahman Park, Erbil

#Nature / Park, #Must See
Built on the site of Saddam Hussein's former military base and detention camp, Sami Abdulrahman Park draws scores of locals for relaxation and recreation. Favored by families and wedding parties, the park boasts rolling green lawns, lakes with fountains, rose gardens, children's playgrounds, and a small amphitheater. Take a jog along the running track, or simply stroll the tree-lined pathways and soak in the atmosphere. The park commemorates a former prime minister that was one of nearly 100 people who lost their lives in a 2004 terrorist attack. See their names inscribed in the memorial monument, together with words "Freedom is not free." • It is a very nice place and peaceful for relaxing and doing your daily exercises.
  • Biggest park in Kurdistan which contains many fun free area; free running, kids play yard etc..
  • Very large beautiful park with countless free facilities, inculding running track, football fields, all sorts of sports fields, climbing wall, outdoor gyms, street work out. Countless play castles and playgounds for kids. Also it is the social hub of Erbil, with weddings and parties, picknic etc. Also payed facilities are available, indoor and outdoor swimming pools, restaurants, indoor gym, speed boat on lake, water bike. The best place for expats (like me) to get in contact with the super friendly local population.

Where to stay in Erbil

Running out from the central citadel in concentric circles, the city of Erbil offers a good set of accommodations. As a rule, the farther from the center you get (while still within the city proper), the newer the buildings and the more luxurious the hotels. If you're a real fan of luxury, look to the west of the city center, where impressive modern hotels overlook Sami Abdulrahman Park. If you're looking for something suited to tighter budgets, consider guesthouses and simple, older hotels.
