Citadel of Arbil, Erbil

(3.1/5 based on 200+ reviews on the web)
The World Heritage Site of Citadel of Arbil showcases a historic fortress perched upon a large 'tell', a mound formed by the site being constantly occupied since the ancient times. Excavations show evidence of the citadel’s inhabitation in the 5th millennium BC, and possibly even earlier, in the Neolithic Period. Exploring the maze-like alleys and antique buildings within the citadel’s stone walls, you will discover thousands of years of Erbil’s rich history and cultural heritage, from prehistoric times to the Neo-Assyrian and Ottoman eras. Put Citadel of Arbil and other Erbil attractions into our Erbil tour planner, and watch your holiday take shape.

  • Unfortunately the Citadel is still a big construction side but nonetheless quite worth a visit. Great view over the city.  more »
  • The Citadel is really worth a visit. Not only the huge terrain with the fortifications on the mountain is worth seeing, but also the many small monuments, E.g. the textile Museum, the Gem Museum, the mosque, the antique shop (with his strict Babu who wants to... not be). The restoration is already well advanced and will be financed internationally. Everything seems professionally thought out. The views of the Shar-or Nishtiman space is great!
