Amir Chakhmagh, Yazd

4.2
#4 of 10 in Things to do in Yazd
Casting an impressive shadow over its surrounding square, Amir Chakhmagh stands as an iconic mosque complex in the capital city. With an intricate facade of 24 symmetrical sunken alcoves, the 15th-century structure rises three stories over the city's central square, overlooking a historic bathhouse, rows of fountains, and a market bazaar built into the base of the facade. Climb the narrow spiral staircase to the first floor and gaze out from the railed alcoves across the bustling, vibrant square. At night, amber lighting floods each alcove in a memorable spectacle. • Nice place to see at sunset, the Sun, and then illuminated. The Nakhl, exposed on the square, symbol of the coffin of Husein, is the most imposing of Yazd. For the Ashura, he is covered in black and green fabrics, and will be carried by about 100 men through the place. Don't forget to go buy some cookies to the best pastry of Yazd, which is at the corner of the street. Very low price.
