US Den of Espionage, Tehran

2.1
#7 of 17 in Historic Sites in Tehran
See where the Iranian hostage crisis took place during the 1979 Iranian Revolution at US Den of Espionage, today painted with colorful anti-American murals. Back then, a revolutionary guard took hold of the former embassy and used it as a training center. Today, the guard still looks after the building, which now houses a library and a museum--both closed to the public except on rare occasions. At the entrance, inspect the severely damaged but still-standing U.S. seal. The murals, funded by the Iranian government to suggest the political alliance between America and Israel, depict a grotesque skull-faced Statue of Liberty and the U.S. Capitol topped by the Israeli flag. A visit to US Den of Espionage represents just the start of the adventure when you use our Tehran itinerary planner to plot your vacation.

We visited the former us Embassy. There was, that you could, but that we were not. There were all diplomats (Russian?), maybe that was the reason. It is clearly an important place, and very anti-American!

Everything is closed, so you can only visit this historic spot on the outside. Images of 1979 come anyway if you walk around here. Few nice murals and that's it.

The embassy is in a central location, but it was closed for renovation for one month. The exterior walls of the embassy were covered in anti-American graffiti which makes for a very interesting walk a...  more »

Where to stay in Tehran

The northern districts of Tehran possess a more suburban, cosmopolitan feel, and a more spacious form, with a number of accommodations geared towards international tourism. Luxury hotels with pools overlooking the parks sit alongside some more basic and humble offerings, usually located on the lesser side streets. The southern districts offer a livelier experience, where guesthouses, hostels, and simple hotels line the confusing bundle of winding streets. Of course, some areas of the south open up a little, and here you'll find a good number of standard and mid-range hotels with varying levels of amenities.
