US Den of Espionage, Tehran

2.4
#6 of 17 in Historic Sites in Tehran
See where the Iranian hostage crisis took place during the 1979 Iranian Revolution at US Den of Espionage, today painted with colorful anti-American murals. Back then, a revolutionary guard took hold of the former embassy and used it as a training center. Today, the guard still looks after the building, which now houses a library and a museum--both closed to the public except on rare occasions. At the entrance, inspect the severely damaged but still-standing U.S. seal. The murals, funded by the Iranian government to suggest the political alliance between America and Israel, depict a grotesque skull-faced Statue of Liberty and the U.S. Capitol topped by the Israeli flag. • Admission to US Den is Rial 200,000. Personally feel that it's not worth for the admission into the embassy unless if you are really interested in knowing the story of it. Tour guide will bring you ar...  more »
  • Good trip inside to know more about the work around of US Embassy and the history of the Iranian students crashing in to the Embassy. Go if you are a history buff.  more »
  • Former American Embassy was occupied by Iran's revolution. Come learn the history and different interest. I would feel during a visit here if you learn why Iran rushed to the anti-American, watching the movie "ARGO", totally different.

Where to stay in Tehran

The northern districts of Tehran possess a more suburban, cosmopolitan feel, and a more spacious form, with a number of accommodations geared towards international tourism. Luxury hotels with pools overlooking the parks sit alongside some more basic and humble offerings, usually located on the lesser side streets. The southern districts offer a livelier experience, where guesthouses, hostels, and simple hotels line the confusing bundle of winding streets. Of course, some areas of the south open up a little, and here you'll find a good number of standard and mid-range hotels with varying levels of amenities.
