Tehran Bazaar, Tehran

3.5
#1 of 27 in Shopping in Iran
An expansive labyrinth of busy stalls and shops, Tehran Bazaar lures you in with its endless realm of shopping opportunities. Hundreds of covered corridors and lanes provide sections of clothing, souvenirs, spices, carpets, and much, much more. Following the footsteps of thousands of shoppers before you, haggle your way between vendors, keeping a keen eye out for the bargain of the day hidden among the alcoves. A market of some sort has existed on this spot for centuries, although much of the architecture you see today is no more than 200 years old. • A "true" Bazaar, no tourists (or almost), immense, labyrinthine, sometimes very poor, less luxurious, vital. Sellers and buyers very peaceful and relaxed (at least towards closing time). As elsewhere in Iran, I couldn't find sellers nagging and annoying beggars. For shopping, though, I would recommend most other city (Esfahan and Shiraz).

  • Center of Tehran city. All hustle of bustle of Tehran is over there and you could basically buy everything in this Bazaar.  more »
  • One of the most poor among the Iranian Bazaar, is well worth the visit, is in the middle of the central square. You can buy spices, copper and other products.

Where to stay in Tehran

The northern districts of Tehran possess a more suburban, cosmopolitan feel, and a more spacious form, with a number of accommodations geared towards international tourism. Luxury hotels with pools overlooking the parks sit alongside some more basic and humble offerings, usually located on the lesser side streets. The southern districts offer a livelier experience, where guesthouses, hostels, and simple hotels line the confusing bundle of winding streets. Of course, some areas of the south open up a little, and here you'll find a good number of standard and mid-range hotels with varying levels of amenities.
