Kandovan, Tabriz
(4/5 based on 190+ reviews on the web)
See the ancient cave houses of Kandovan, a small village on the slopes of Mt. Sahand. The village attracts visitors with its houses carved into the volcanic stone cliffs, hundreds of years old and still inhabited. Admire the eclectic structures sprawled across the rocky cliffside, eroded into interesting cone-like shapes, home to more than a hundred local families, and equipped with furniture, power, and some even with running water. The village also boasts a rock hotel, where you can stay in a stone-carved room for the night. Work out when and for how long to visit Kandovan and other Tabriz attractions using our handy Tabriz trip itinerary planner.

  • This is quite a unique place in the lonely and treelass mountains. The people have digged holes into rock formations - their homes, rather caves, windowless mostly. People are friendly there, and in t...  more »
  • We walked through the village, up and down again. The caves are in the upper part of the village. People on a donkey and donkeys which loads on or run down, you can see much. The people are friendly, but women do not like to be photographed, so don't do that to the way of life of the residents not to bother too much. To the right part at the top was an older man. He invited us to first in his home without any comfort, and later in his current home a look. He also offers a cup of tea. Of course, the man that not just, he wants to earn it. We gave for the whole 135,000 Rial. That turned out OK. There is no form of communication as possible as you no Turkish or Farsi. View the village and its people please not as a zoo. Be calm and friendly There should be quite climbed at the top.
