Sultan Amir Ahmad Bathhouse, Kashan

4.5
#3 of 13 in Things to do in Kashan
Elaborately decorated with turquoise and gold tiles, the quiet meditative ambiance of Sultan Amir Ahmad Bathhouse evokes its past as an important public gathering place. The 16th-century hammam--named after a sultan who was buried in a nearby mausoleum--features an octagonal dressing area (Sarbineh) and a hot bathing hall (Garmkhaneh). It was restored on two occasions: after 1778 earthquake and in 1996. Take a self-guided tour through the hamam, and visit the rooftop to see many small domes and scenic views of the surroundings. • Exquisitely decorated with delicate paintings and richly coloured tiles, the relaxing atmosphere created by the sound of water under the magnificent dome makes this Sultan Mir Ahmad bathhouse one of our favourite places in Iran. The walk through the rooftop complements the visit and reinforces the impression of sheer wonder in front of the skill and talent of ancient Persian architects.
  • This is without doubt one of the most beautiful historical bathhouses I've seen in Iran. the attention to details while building this place is just staggering.
  • Incredible city view and a roof quite amazing. Buy a combine ticket to visit three historical houses ; Abbasian and Tabatabeaa
  • Nice place if you like old and impressive houses. I recommend that you go with a guide since there is not very much written information inside.
  • A beautuful old building in the center of old Kashan. If you visit it don't miss the roof. There is a stair just after the entrance in the room where the clerk is selling the tickets. Wit that stair you get to the roof with all that "bubbles". It reminds me after a Starwars film set;)

Where to stay in Kashan

As with many of Iran's cities, tourism in Kashan has not yet reached its full potential and its range of accommodations seems surprisingly sparse. The majority of places to stay sit within walking distance of Agha Bozorg Mosque, with a few additional options lining Amir Kabir Street. Most options come in the form of guesthouses or simple hotels, but a handful of traditional-style luxury accommodations offer a more special experience. Due to restrictions on foreign credit cards, you might have difficulties reserving you room ahead of time.
