Yogyakarta Bird Market, Yogyakarta

2.2
For the chance to buy--or simply observe--a range of avian, reptile, and amphibian species, head to Yogyakarta Bird Market. The market provides an educational opportunity to see how the locals here live and work, as well as insight into the relationship between Indonesian culture and animals. Be sure to check reviews before going, as the ethics and atmosphere of a caged animal market may not be for everyone. • Markets are generally nice and that may also apply to animals-and certainly for bird markets but about this location is not much good to report. Of course, the birds also sing here nineteen to the dozen, definitely so beautifully colored copies only in a fairly large cage, but the "lofts" in which most critters on each other are locked, in the heat and often without water etc. are regrettable to call. We do have some little birds bought to this-to apparently Javanese use "for the happiness" again, but in the courtyard of our hotel; that gave it a good feeling!

  • Indonesians love owning a bird in a cage at home. It is therefore very interesting to visit Jogyakarta bird market. Of course, sometimes it's heart-wrenching to see several birds in the same cage or see wild birds be there but the purpose is not to judge the culture of others but to learn a little more about these people.

  • Puppies, kittens, reptiles and birds; what’s not to like? Didn’t see any large parrots or cockatoos, which is probably good. I had a very nice chicken soup in this cool shaded garden market.
  • There are various kinds of animals. Like the reptiles, birds and many other yg. ★ ★ ★ ★ ★
