Puri Saren Palace, Ubud

3.3
#59 of 423 in Things to do in Ubud
Wander through a small section of the tranquil grounds of Puri Saren Palace, full of intricate sculptures, religious carvings, and ornate architecture. The palace once served as the former residence of Tjokorda Gede Agung Sukawati (1910–1978), the last ruling monarch of Ubud. Today the grounds are open to the public (not the building though), and hold regular cultural performances featuring masked performers and fire dancers moving to hypnotic percussion. We had expected a greater experience. The Palace was more like a narrow park with wall and many beautiful buildings. Well worth a visit, but don't expect too much.

While in regency Ubud, it’s always great to see the puri saren palace. It’s a holy place for the locals as well as a must see for tourists.  more »

The Puri Saren Palace, whose visit is free, is in the center of Ubud and has seen better days. That said, he needed to renovate it and today it disappoints a bit because we can see everything. What remains is still "visitable" and of traditional Balinese architecture with the inevitable lions dressed, wearing column truncated and together decorated red brick wall. Little time to spend but worth a visit if you go through here.

Where to stay in Ubud

Sayan Valley offers luxury accommodations atmospherically designed to fit the look and feel of the natural surroundings, with infinity pools, wooden lodges, and yoga-ready verandas aplenty. Less expensive alternatives are also available, albeit with fewer amenities and a little less isolation. If you wish to stay in Ubud itself, look for charming and inexpensive rooms rented by local families (with many including breakfast in the cost), or consider the pricier single-occupancy apartments.
