Sand Sea, Tengger Caldera

(4.2/5 based on 130+ reviews on the web)
A protected nature reserve since 1919, Sand Sea represents a flat desert area made of volcanic ash and surrounding Mount Bromo, an active volcano. Visitors usually walk or rent an all-terrain vehicle to cross the desert and stop at the viewpoint on the volcano for photo ops. If you take a bike, be prepared for a struggle on the wind-blown sand. Try wriggling the handlebars to gain some traction. Thrill seekers can also ask their drivers about sandboarding, a way to ride a board pulled by a vehicle.
