Tenganan Ancient Village, Manggis

Historic Site · Tourist Spot
Travel back to a simpler time with a visit to Tenganan Ancient Village, one of area's oldest communities. Home to the Bali Aga, the original inhabitants of Bali, this settlement features traditional architecture and preserves its age-old techniques for producing textiles. Surrounded by a wall, the village consists of simple homes with green hills as their backdrop. While no motorized vehicles can enter the settlement, you can walk in through one of three main gates, where a small donation grants you full access. The locals make the best guides, and at least a few of them always greet visitors at the gates and offer tours around their compact village. • Our hired driver took us here without doing any research. If I had have read the comments on TA I probably wouldn't have gone. In saying that our guide in the village was fantastic. He was very...  more »

  • I am giving this 2 stars only because of the beautiful lush green surroundings is this village. Otherwise .. it was a complete waste and disappointing experience. Our local guide shared no...  more »
  • Interesting place, but not as strikingly different to the rest of Bali as expected. A bit better because we got a guide, if you don't get a guide there's nothing to see except sellers. Considering the location is out of the way it'd be just as good to read about it online.
  • Definitely another tourist shopping trap. Really do not require a long time here. People are not all authentic.
  • Interesting to see the old handicrafts and art still being done in the village houses. Ate a very tasty rujak mangga under the magnolia tree.
  • It is actually a great place to visit and see one of the "Bali Aga" ancient Bali village left. The buildings, the art, and nice people are reasons that I would recommend people to come. However, I should agree with some other people comments... I miss the ambient of the traditional houses since almost every house there are changed into shop 😔 and I can also see many plastic trash at the back side of the village that the villager burn 😢 I think maybe it will be great to visit again during the Tenganan Festival around June next year
  • If you're interested in how balinese people lived before this is the place to go. Be careful with shopping scarfs, not everything is made there, some stuff is imported. Painted eggs and the carvings on palm leaves are impressive!
