Gunung Kawi Sebatu Temple, Tegalalang

(400+ reviews on the web)
Ruin
Admire the intricate stone carvings and various statues and shrines at Gunung Kawi Sebatu Temple. A Hindu temple dedicated to Vishnu, the preserver god who rules over water, this hidden gem features grounds filled with natural springs and lotus ponds inhabited by golden carp. You can feed the fish, roam the lush forest landscape, and even drink the pure cold water from the springs. Be prepared to descend quite a lot of steps to get to the site, but once you do you will be rewarded with lovely surroundings and views of the rice fields. Note that women will need to wear a sarong, and men a sash, to enter. • The temple's down in the Valley. Halfway we discover a magnificent view of the rice terraces. The nature that surrounds the site is an incredible lushness. We were accompanied by our guide Gede, which is a real plus to have all the history that accompanies this temple, the kings who are buried there. To do it without hesitation

  • First a quick note: if you are out of shape, get ready for some serious exercise!!! Take it slow!!!! The steps down and up will test you, especially in the Bali heat. I am a bit plump and I did nearly...  more »

  • One of the most beautiful, unique and hidden temple in Bali. Not many tourists will go here, so it's very quiet. There's a long and beautiful walk down the hill (with good stepping stones) across rice fields and small streams. Great stone statues inside.
  • Beautiful temple lost in the middle of the forest and rice fields. Impressive carvings, it is also a quieter temple than others, mainly due to the stairs preceding it's entrance. Loads of shops at the entrance so you can buy a sarong if you forgot yours or have a refreshing coconut at the end.
  • Beautiful temple in the middle of the rice fields and forest. A lot of stairs to climb up and down but the pretty scene around will distract your hesitancy. Very quaint, clean and historical inside.
  • A must when in Ubud. You feel like your right in an Indian Jones film. Takes your breath away when you go around the corner to see the temples. Stunning and worth every penny. The stairs with all the shops are however very annoying if you don't want to buy!
  • Gunung Kwai is a really cool place to check out the temple is caved into the tbe sides of a gorge with a lovely river running though it. Its one of my fave in Bali. Beware there are many steps down which are easy, but the trek back up can be pretty sweaty!!
