Gunung Kawi Sebatu Temple, Tegalalang

4.6
#3 of 7 in Things to do in Tegalalang
Admire the intricate stone carvings and various statues and shrines at Gunung Kawi Sebatu Temple. A Hindu temple dedicated to Vishnu, the preserver god who rules over water, this hidden gem features grounds filled with natural springs and lotus ponds inhabited by golden carp. You can feed the fish, roam the lush forest landscape, and even drink the pure cold water from the springs. Be prepared to descend quite a lot of steps to get to the site, but once you do you will be rewarded with lovely surroundings and views of the rice fields. Note that women will need to wear a sarong, and men a sash, to enter. Of all temples we visited in Bali we liked this one best. The location is wonderful and the 1000 year-old stone carvings are absolutely amazing. Be prepared to walk down a couple of hundred steps (and...  more »

We reached the temple on a scooter taking the road from Ubud goes North and in 40 minutes we reached Gunung Kawi Temple. We paid the usual 15,000 rupees for entry (about €1) and started the visit. Inside the temples you should wear the sarong (pareo)-you can buy just outside stalls or at the entrance to the folks they lend to tourists behind modest sum (about 2,000 rupees, 20 cents or so). This temple is famous for the numerous steps and statues carved in the rock. Pleasant to visit because there are monkeys.

We visited today this temple along with other three others. Was undoubtedly the most charming the most authentic and the most beautiful. Perhaps thanks to a more sheltered position in contrast to the other was much less frequented, the temple is below street level is this from a security connotation and greater peace. The pools of water for ablution and monuments of the temple are beautiful, at the entrance of the temple there is a big tank full of fish and a pagoda cleared allowing to stand and take a break. There is also a treat, a pure very impressive with a rock wall with sloping greenery in the middle of a hot tub semi secluded, gorgeous! A must-see!

Amazing place. Feel so quite and peace. The stone cliffs were carved for praying temple. There are also ponds where people can purity their soul. This temple has several times became movie sets for its uniqueness. There are hundreds of stairs to step down to the temple area.

Wonderful place. To get there you have to take 200steps down. When we arrived there were some women trying to sell you sarong. A dress to enter the temple. Do not buy these as this is a scam. You can use one for free at the entrance. It was not crowded with tourists as we expected.

Beautiful and tickets are very affordable. Always bargain with the sellers on the side and I will get them as low as I can and when they refuse to go lower, walk. They'll call you back and you'll get a price you want. Try to ignore the conversion rate. Just because it's cheap in dollars or Euros doesn't mean that you aren't paying double or triple the worth.

Amazing place. Specially those stone sculptures. Entry ticket is 15k idr each. Also there is parking ticket of 2k. You better be in your good shape for those many steps.
