Lake Beratan, Tabanan

4.4
#2 of 15 in Parks in Tabanan
Fresh air, misty mountains, and a major Shivaite temple make Lake Beratan a rewarding destination in the north-central region. Constructed in the 17th century to honor the river goddess Dewi Danu, this multi-tiered temple remains an iconic image of traditional Bali. The shallow caldera lake sits 1,200 m (4,000 ft) above sea level and provides a tranquil setting for boat rides, picnics, and long walks. The area also boasts several smaller water temples, as well as Indonesia's largest botanic garden. Bring your camera and prepare for cool mountain air by wearing clothing appropriate for higher elevation. This Lake is located near the road that leads from South to North Bali and that passes through the central mountains. The crossing point is located in Bedugul village, where the large tourist complex of Ulun Danu Bratan dedicated to the water goddess Dewi Danu, which here is of particular importance. This Lake is indeed a great water supply and feeds all the plantations of the region. Periodically the Balinese organize ceremonies in this temple for the goddess to encourage the production of water. Deposited offerings in the temple and then we plunge them into the Lake with boats to pendulum, honouring the goddess. You can also travel on the Lake with boats to rocker, from the nautical station which is located in front of the temple on the other side of the Lake. To fully enjoy this site you must come here in good weather because the days of rain or overcast weather, the lake view is often blocked by mists that prevent all remote visibility. However, the atmosphere is a little mysterious and this does not prevent the visit to the temple, which is not without interest. When you arrive on site, we are a little worried by the presence of many cars of tourists, and cars on the parking; that gives the impression of a big mess. So better come morning early or late in the afternoon and especially not the weekend!

Where to stay in Tabanan

Options for accommodations on your Tabanan holiday are as diverse as the geography of the region itself. The town of Tabanan, from which the region takes its name, has a few options, but you're better off looking elsewhere if you want to see the area's best sights. Head up north and stay in an eco-resort near Mount Batukaru, or base yourself in the old town of Mengyi for easy access to the Taman Ayun temple complex. If you want something more cultural, go for a homestay among the region's central rice paddy fields. While Tabanan's coastline remains less developed than that of many other regions in Bali, you can find some excellent luxury beach resorts, especially around Kerambitan.
