Jembatan Merah, Surabaya
Categories: Bridges, Tourist Spots
A testament to the battle of Surabaya that occurred on November 10, 1945, Jembatan Merah witnessed some of the most savage fighting in the region. The bridge was formerly under Dutch colonization, and it is here that local soldiers fought off the Dutch. Today the red structure carries an important legacy and stands as a symbol of independence for the people of Surabaya. Located in a commercial area, it connects the financial sector to residential areas. While in the area, consider exploring other Dutch heritage sites nearby, as well as some small and inexpensive shopping stalls.
