Londa Burial Caves, Rantepao

Cemetery
The haunting atmosphere of Londa Burial Caves introduces you to the post mortem traditions of Indonesia. Greeting you at the entrance of the cave is a balcony of tau tau, traditional effigies of the deceased made out of wood or bamboo. You'll need to take a guide with you, who leads the way with an oil lamp while explaining the traditions and history of the tomb. Worn out possessions and gifts carrying specific meaning to the deceased lay around piles of bones and coffins. Be respectful of the sacred grounds and refrain from touching any of the remains. Plan your visit to Londa Burial Caves and a wealth of other attractions, well-known and undiscovered, using our Rantepao trip itinerary maker.

  • Not a cave explorer but this is a sacred site and when in Rome... yes you need a torch, but also strong footwear. I ended up going barefoot, as it was very slippery. Didn't like the bull tied up at th...  more »
  • Londa presents another side of Toraja funeral rites but this time with a distinction more marked between superior and common mortals caste: each his cave. Natural caves located where, under my eyes frozen Tau - Tau at the entrance, one enters accompanied by local guides who carry the necessary lighting and you manifest the need for a tip. Well, locate your guide, the risk of having to distribute all, 1 by 1. The best, if you are in a group, give your stay guide who will be responsible for the distribution. Being in low season facilitates accessibility in these caves narrow and slippery. Note that a couple of young "suicide" inherited the name Romeo and Juliet. Finally the site is rather atypical with its huge front porch.
