Equator Monument, Pontianak

3.4
#1 of 36 in Sightseeing in Kalimantan
Monument Tourist Spot
Stand with one foot in the Northern Hemisphere and the other in the Southern at Equator Monument. The small monument consists of four poles topped with an arrow and three consecutive rings, pointing along the equator. This structure stands in place of an earlier monument, a simple pole and arrow put there by an unknown Dutch explorer in 1928. Because the planet has shifted on its axis slightly, the monument no longer sits exactly on the equator--a line right next to the monument shows its true position. • Historical place with well documented story. It was being renovated to add additional features like shop & gift shop. Parking area was vast for both motorcycles and cars. Kapuas River tour using boat also available there.
  • After all these years, they are finally upgrading the place to be more tourist-friendly. Works are still in progress when we were there... so expect better things to come. Otherwise, the enclosure that houses the monument is engaging itself to a certain extent.
  • The original monument is located inside the building. Displays are in both English and Indonesian. Besides photographing yourself straddling the line separating the northern and southern hemisphere, check out the excellent copper reliefs on the surrounding walls.
  • This is the legendary icon of this city, you should be there at least once in a lifetime. The local government give a good effort to make this place as a better option to visit
  • welcome to 0┬░latitude. you can do selfie with the equator monument. you also can do beautiful selfie beside kapuas river. you are also able to explore the river by the boat. Seems goverment just renovated it by adding some place for the stores n lovely garden. I will come again next time to see how this place will be.

Where to stay in Pontianak

Pontianak offers lots of options to choose from, including backpacker dorm rooms and luxurious suites. Centrally located hotels provide easy access to the international airport and popular Pontianak attractions. Although the hotel market continues to improve with more upscale alternatives opening each year, the least expensive rooms rarely offer air conditioning and mosquito nets, so be ready to sacrifice basic comforts if you really want to save a buck.
