Categories: Landmarks, Tourist Spots
A 17th-century fortress strategically created as an island in itself Benteng Kuto Besak, stands bordered by four rivers. The white stronghold represents a legacy of the Palembang Darussalam Sultanate, the Dutch colonial that reigned between the 16th and 19th centuries. Originally built as a defensive fort, the fortress still looks down over the rivers below and is operated by the military. While you can't access the fortress itself, you can walk the length of its high white walls and enjoy the vantage point of the famous Ampera Bridge nearby.
