Ampera Bridge, Palembang

#1 of 84 in Sightseeing in Sumatra
Bridge Tourist Spot
Admire the striking red design of Ampera Bridge. Envisaged as Indonesia's answer to London's Tower Bridge, the structure contains a mechanism to lift the central section and allow boats to pass through--however, this only occurred a handful of times. Officials state that the 30 minutes needed to raise the bridge caused unacceptable delays, and that a build-up of silt prevents large ships from passing through anyway. Architect Wiratman Wangsadinata, who consulted on the project, claims the bridge's design was flawed from the beginning, and the mechanism no longer works because the bridge has sunk into the soft mud beneath it. Despite all that, it remains an attractive feature of the cityscape, and features a dedicated pedestrian ramp if you want to walk across. At night, simple but effective lights illuminate the bridge, accentuating its elegant structure. Where to stay in Palembang

Unusually for a city of its size, Palembang's budget-friendly options are not as plentiful as other destinations within Indonesia. By contrast, you'll find luxury hotels ranging from three- to five-star in good supply here. Offering large banquets, Wi-Fi, ensuite bathrooms, indoor swimming pools, and other recreational facilities, some of these hotels rise to an impressive 18 stories, so accommodations should not be hard to find within a midrange to upscale budget. For more affordable lodgings, explore the few backpacker-friendly hostels, bed and breakfasts, and guesthouses.
