Admire the striking red design of Ampera Bridge. Envisaged as Indonesia's answer to London's Tower Bridge, the structure contains a mechanism to lift the central section and allow boats to pass through--however, this only occurred a handful of times. Officials state that the 30 minutes needed to raise the bridge caused unacceptable delays, and that a build-up of silt prevents large ships from passing through anyway. Architect Wiratman Wangsadinata, who consulted on the project, claims the bridge's design was flawed from the beginning, and the mechanism no longer works because the bridge has sunk into the soft mud beneath it. Despite all that, it remains an attractive feature of the cityscape, and features a dedicated pedestrian ramp if you want to walk across. At night, simple but effective lights illuminate the bridge, accentuating its elegant structure.
