Lake Maninjau, Padang

4.3
#1 of 47 in Parks in West Sumatra
Home of sweeping views and small but thriving fish farms, Lake Maninjau remains a peaceful place, despite its popularity with foreign tourists. Formed by a volcanic eruption some 50,000 years ago, this caldera lake sits about 460 m (1,500 ft) above sea level. To reach the lake, take a bus from Bukittinggi. The scenic journey takes visitors down a narrow road making 44 hairpin bends before it reaches the lakeshore. Experience the area on a bicycle, or speed through the lush lakeside surroundings on a motorcycle. If you prefer slower activities, take a canoe trip across the lake. Where to stay in Padang

Following the massive earthquake of 2009, accommodation options in Padang have slightly decreased due to the demolishment of some of the city's older hotels. Since then, a spate of more modern hotels and lodgings have cropped up, offering onsite restaurants serving authentic local and international food, Wi-Fi, and air conditioning. Otherwise, family-owned and run guesthouses with clean, basic rooms (and sometimes ensuite bathrooms) remain the best options for budget-conscious backpackers.
