Lake Toba, North Sumatra
Categories: Bodies of Water, Nature & Parks
Visit Lake Toba, the largest lake in Southeast Asia. At 100 km (62 mi) long and 30 km (19 mi) wide, this immense body of water fills the caldera of a supervolcano. Somewhere between 69,000 and 77,000 years ago, the volcano erupted in what was the largest known explosive eruption in the last 25 million years. Take a hiking trip to fully appreciate the extent of this natural wonder, or sail its waters on a guided tour. An island the size of Singapore sits in its center, with pristine landscape dotted with waterfalls that can be explored.
