Marian Shrine of Annai Velangkanni, Medan

4.5
#1 of 10 in Historic Sites in North Sumatra
Opened in 2005, Marian Shrine of Annai Velangkanni represents a Catholic temple especially notable for its Indo-Mogul style architecture, exemplified by the seven small stories rising up to form a pyramid at the height of the structure that follows more conventional modes of Indonesian construction. Survey the colorful and vibrant biblical imagery, as well as quotes from the Bible, once you enter this unusual, storied structure. Visitors are able to collect holy water from the shrine. • A little bit far from central city. The architecture looks like Hindu temples but actually is Catholic Church.  more »
  • The church building was very riveting. The architecture of the Church is nuanced India. In the complex there is 1 church building and 2 chapels. To enter into the Church must maintain calmness because there are some people praying. We can take pictures inside the Church, but must be guided by the guard on duty.

  • This is a beautiful church. If you are in medan, put it in a must visit list. The architecture of this place is heavily influence of Hinduism and Catholicism. It was so colorful. There is no mass when we arrived as it was Sunday.
  • The church is so unique. With Hindu temple style look alike, people will not notice this is a church if they are not see inside the church complex. There are so many recites from Bible in many Indonesian local languages written on the walls.
  • Person (a guy) who was taking care of the church was very rude. We went to see the "holy water" but he rudely came to us and said we must leave there. You are Not allowed to take pictures in any sections of this church as well. Not happy of spending so much time to go there.
  • No doubt that this is one of the unique churches (because of its Indian architecture). Surprisingly, I didn't really feel blown away with this church. Still, it is "must visit" place when you're in Medan. The place was pretty crowded due to Christmas day. So, I wish you Merry Christmas for those who celebrate it 😊😊😊
  • Neither a mosque nor a temple. This Indian-style church is the only one you can find outside India.
