  • We went from Maumere with the scooter in ca 1 hour to the starting point of the hike. The junction is very hard to find and we have need to ask in the next village. A sign at the beginning of the route would be very helpful. The tour begins trees right very steeply to a meadow with single. Up to the tree line, you get really sweat. From the meter takes about 1 hour. Partly, you must climb a bit. But is all harmless. There, it should be not too late, because in the afternoon, the mountain in the clouds will disappear and you can see nothing. In the crater, but often still unobstructed and no fog is. The volcano is active and at the top, you can hear the whistle and you can smell the sulfur fumes. In the crater are several openings with steam and sulfur holes. The blast of past eruptions are clearly visible. The path to the crater rim is very time consuming and even exhausting in the vicinity of the highest point. The volcano is visited rarely. We have made only a small group of German tourists on the day, which were already at the relegation. At the Summit, we were alone on the road. The Egon is very well suited as training tour for the Rinjanibesteigung. Important: at the junction of the main road, there is a kiosk. Here you should get its drinking water and some cookies. Sunscreen is also very important. Hiking boots are recommended if you want to get in the crater. You can drop and take back parts of the luggage at the measuring station. Here, nothing comes out. Bottom line: If you are physically fit should climb the Egon. Is much nicer, more adventurous and uncivilised as of Kelimutu.
