Jakarta Arts Building, Jakarta

4.4
The Jakarta Art Building, historically known as Schouwburg Weltevreden, is a concert hall in Sawah Besar, Central Jakarta, Indonesia, built during the colonial period in Batavia, Dutch East Indies.HistoryThe idea for the creation of a theater in Batavia came from the Governor-General of Batavia at that time, Herman Willem Daendels. This idea was realized by Stamford Raffles, who was known for his passion for the study and preservation of local culture. In 1814 Raffles ordered the construction of a simple bamboo theatre near Waterlooplein, under the name "Military Theater Venue". It was built by English soldiers and had a capacity of 250 people. This first theater in Batavia was used from 1811 to 1816 for the entertainment of British soldiers. In August 1816, the English gave the Indies back to the Dutch East Indies and Batavia was under the governorship of the Netherlands once more. Performances were again held in the building on April 21, 1817, by groups of Dutch amateur performers. In 1820 the bamboo theater began to show signs of deterioration, and in 1821, supported by the Dutch colonial government, it was replaced with a more permanent structure. The architect chosen to design the building was J.C. Schultze

  • The long building from colonial times until the present day Netherlands and still continue to exist is used to stage art events. The building is still very well preserved, elegant, clean and comfortable. Very rekomended for folk art performances. Still continues to be preserved! Good job.

  • Old building but look great. Strategist. Near from Juanda station, Pasar Baru Shelter Transjakarta. Parking area available.
  • Classic design is the best, i think. The building is old, but is well maintained. The chairs don't make you itch, although they might not be very comfy for large people. Room Size is good, so nobody would miss much details no matter where they sit. The acoustic is better than new art buildings that I have been in. Too bad they don't have wheelchair accessible facilities.
  • Beautiful concert hall. Very well preserved and gives you an idea of how things were during the colonial times. Too bad it was closed when I went there and I had a hard time finding out the upcoming events happening soon. Will update this review once I find out more about concerts happening here.
  • Came here to watch the live Solo Concert of maestro domenico nordio from Italia. The place is good and it has clean toilet. Very strategically located near transjakarta shelter and close to starbucks and pasar baru Find me on youtube: Milo Montang
  • Surprisingly spacious inside with adequate air conditioning installed. Interesting choice of interior. Note that on row D to S the seat is not reclining.
