The National Gallery of Indonesia is a museum and an art gallery in Jakarta, Indonesia. The National Gallery of Indonesia has existed as a cultural institution in the field of visual arts since May 8, 1999. The institution plays an important role in expanding public's awareness of artworks through preservation, development and exploitation of the visual arts in Indonesia.HistoryEducational complexThe complex was located at Koningsplein Oost No. 14, Batavia. The main building (Gedung A) was built in 1817 by G.C. Van Rijk as an Indische Woonhuis (Indies residence) in a Dutch Indies colonial style. The materials for the construction were taken from the remains of Kasteel Batavia. In 1900, the complex was converted into a HBS educational institution known as Carpentier Alting Stichting (CAS) under the authority of the Dutch Protestant pastor and prominent Freemason Albertus Samuel Carpentier Alting (1837–1915). The former Indies residence (Gedung A) were converted into a female dormitory building, while several buildings were added to improve the facility of the school: a lyceum or primary school (1902, now Gedung B of the National Gallery); a MULO or junior high school; and a HBS or senior high school. After independence in 1945, the CAS remained operational to serve Djakarta's large remaining white settler community, although the Indonesian government forced the school to admit students from all races. In 1955, the Indonesian government forbade all activities related to the Dutch colonial administration. The educational institution were placed under the authority of Raden Saleh Foundation, which continued the activities of CAS and remained under the auspices of the Freemasonry.

  • Their art collection is quite wide, from the colonial era through the modern era -- sectioned carefully. They also have a few of Raden Saleh's famous paintings inside their permanent exhibition. Just make sure your visit ended before lunch time (about 1 PM) or started after 2 PM, so you won't get interrupted by the (unfriendly) guards. Free admission for their permanent exhibition.
  • The museum's not so big but there are a lot of great paintings inside, both fine & contemporary arts. Love the display, too. They paint the wall with different colors and placed the paintings accordingly, which makes the experience even better. Staffs are also nice. The good news is it's completely free, so it's definitely worth a visit!
  • Well-maintained art gallery. Exhibitions here are nicely curated. Good place to start your art adventure in Jakarta.
  • I have been here more than once and I still love this place. They arrange every arts in a good way. Also the place is in the center of the city so its really easy to cross. For those people who love arts, I recommended it.
  • I am a proud Indonesian. I wish I knew this interesting place earlier. The collections are awesome!
