Dieng Plateau, Dieng

(3.8/5 based on 380+ reviews on the web)
Explore the swampy, volcanic landscape of Dieng Plateau, home to vivid mineral lakes, bubbling pools, plumes of sulfurous steam, and some of the oldest Hindu architecture on Java. Formed from a vast caldera--a basin created by a collapsed volcano--the plateau's lofty elevation and tempestuous geography earned it the name "abode of the gods." An estimated 400 temples once filled the valley; today only eight remain--tiny, squat buildings with pyramid roofs, dating from the 7th or 8th century. You can visit the plateau without a guide, but this requires quite a bit of research beforehand, so definitely consider taking one. In the afternoon mists roll in, so try to get an early start for sightseeing. Plan to see Dieng Plateau and other attractions that appeal to you using our Dieng vacation generator.
