Jam Gadang Bukittinggi, Bukittinggi

3.8
#1 of 61 in Things to do in West Sumatra
Monument Tourist Spot
Take a moment to appreciate the Art Deco design of Jam Gadang Bukittinggi. The 26 m (85 ft) clock tower has undergone a few changes since its construction in 1926. Originally a dome affixed with a rooster capped the white tower, but the Japanese replaced this with an ornament resembling a Shinto shrine during their occupation. Following Indonesian independence in the 1940s, this was again replaced with the traditional Indonesian roof style still in place today. Horse drawn carts offering sightseeing tours gather in the clock tower square. For Jam Gadang Bukittinggi and beyond, use our Bukittinggi tour planner to get the most from your Bukittinggi vacation.

  • Lovely place to have family with. It is a land mark of Minangkabau (West Sumatera). given by Dutch during their colonial period, this landmark has at least three times reshaping on the building. You should pay attention on its the fourth number of the clock.
  • One of historical buildings in Bukittinggi located at the very center of the city. You can discover many other historical spots that surrounds it. So, don't forget to check in here if you're visiting West Sumatera. This place is a must see.
  • Surrounded with beautiful scenery. Mount Merapi and Mount Singgalang are clearly visible from here. The air is also cold and refreshing. However, during peak hours, the number of people who gathered led to thousands in quantity. For an area that can accommodate hundreds of people, it just makes us become uncomfortable.
  • Pretty good for a quick snappy photos, because its so crowded here and the traffic jam, is so awfull hope this place get better management and more cleaner overall this place is historical and i like the view near to the hotel, very great big ben of west sumatra :D
  • West Sumatera Icon, crowded at weekend and near market and Bung Hatta Park (another good family place to visit). There are small qty of car park hear. Visitor should try Sado (cart pulled by horse)
