The Bohorok Orangutan Centre at Bukit Lawang, Bukit Lawang

(4.1/5 based on 110+ reviews on the web)
Established in 1973 as a home for ex-captive orangutans, The Bohorok Orangutan Centre at Bukit Lawang has since played an important role in the readjustment of these animals to the wild after captivity. Here you can visit them and observe how they live in what is close to their natural habitat. No longer a rehabilitation center for orangutans, the site now acts as an area for tourists to be taken on guided treks through the national park, where sightings of the orangutan are common. It is important that no physical contact is made with the animals, as orangutans are highly susceptible to a number of human illnesses. • It was very nice to get into the wild jungle with our guide, "Jungle Eddie", and to see the orangotangos so near but always feeling safe. Amazing to see them on their wild habitat.  more »
