The Bohorok Orangutan Centre at Bukit Lawang, Bukit Lawang

4.0
#4 of 20 in Parks in North Sumatra
Established in 1973 as a home for ex-captive orangutans, The Bohorok Orangutan Centre at Bukit Lawang has since played an important role in the readjustment of these animals to the wild after captivity. Here you can visit them and observe how they live in what is close to their natural habitat. No longer a rehabilitation center for orangutans, the site now acts as an area for tourists to be taken on guided treks through the national park, where sightings of the orangutan are common. It is important that no physical contact is made with the animals, as orangutans are highly susceptible to a number of human illnesses. Part of our trip was the visit of the Gunung Leuser National Park in Bukit Lawang. From the launch site, it went through the tropical rain forest, where we soon various monkey according to screaming were able to observe. But we could experience an Orang Utan family from nearby. The female was quite tame and let feed us with bananas. The young animal kept distance and was not to move to come down from the treetops to the ground. What did the male however. Our guide duly kept distance because the male gave us to understand, this is my territory. But it was a super experience and dozens of photos berweisen this. A must for everyone.
