Mount Sibayak, Berastagi

Categories: Volcanos, Nature & Parks
Inspirock Rating:
4.6/5 based on 220+ reviews on the web
Climb to the top of Mount Sibayak for panoramic views of North Sumatra. Anyone of average fitness can manage the trek, which takes about five hours if you climb straight up, or a little longer if you set off through the jungle from a nearby waterfall. You can also take a minibus part of the way up the volcano if you prefer a shorter two-hour climb. At the summit of this stratovolcano is a small crater lake, colored bright green due to the sulfurous gases that seep into it. On the way down, take a dip in the hot springs. Wear sturdy shoes, bring warm clothes, and be prepared for sudden changes of weather. You won't need a guide unless you take the jungle route, but you may still wish to consider one if you are inexperienced or visiting alone. • The climb is worth. We went with the small bus to a small parking lot. From there with the local guide at the Summit. The ascent is simple and easily doable with sensible footwear. There are no problem areas (OK, a little exposed position, that's it then but even). Because we wanted to be up before sunrise, we had to light the way with flashlights / headlamps. That was no problem. Necessarily take a warm jacket - during the climb and at the top it was very cold. Weekend much is going on, on the Summit often because he is a popular destination for the locals. We were on a Monday there. There were only 7 people on the Summit at sunrise. At the weekend, that looks quite different! The dry Crater Lake is disfigured with many lettering (these are merged from stones and permanently available). It's a pity, but is so – I find. My wife was very nice about it. The view is fantastic. Impressive also, the mountain ridge above the clouds more or less flow down. The views of the Sinabung is also very nice. At the moment an eruption is often between 07:00 and 08:00 there visible. The early ascent is worth, you can check the weather once again on the previous day. Also interesting are the places where the Summit comes hot steam from the Earth. The sulphur smell is everywhere. PS: on the rise is a ' base camp / point of tourist supply ". Here, the trash on the way stacks up. Under a big sign that says "enjoy nature and take your rubbish with you again". What a pity.

  • We were lucky and were the only people who climbed to the top. At the top of a great views all around! Several spots where the steam comes out from the volcano. Go early in the morning for a Sunrise one says.
