Mount Sibayak, Berastagi

4.6
#1 of 6 in Things to do in Berastagi
Climb to the top of Mount Sibayak for panoramic views of North Sumatra. Anyone of average fitness can manage the trek, which takes about five hours if you climb straight up, or a little longer if you set off through the jungle from a nearby waterfall. You can also take a minibus part of the way up the volcano if you prefer a shorter two-hour climb. At the summit of this stratovolcano is a small crater lake, colored bright green due to the sulfurous gases that seep into it. On the way down, take a dip in the hot springs. Wear sturdy shoes, bring warm clothes, and be prepared for sudden changes of weather. You won't need a guide unless you take the jungle route, but you may still wish to consider one if you are inexperienced or visiting alone. Beautiful walking tour. We have chosen to not already at sunrise on the mountain, but we are to 08:00 embarked on the Trek. Rather, the path is sometimes quite tricky with high (on) steps and will in the dark a lot trickier. It is not a mountain tour, rather a spirited walk with climbing. You have to be really pretty good. At the bottom you especially over a steep road with very bad road surface. The middle part is some more by vegetation and by trees/shrubs and the upper part you walk through the rougher volcanic landscape. Here many views and you come off at the ancient volcano crater (at rest). There is all kinds of volcanic activity with steam, sulfur etc.. From this location you can then another path to the top. This have done our children and the Guide. Truly stunning views, but especially the last part was pretty spicy. Also, do you have from here a magnificent view on the (very active) Sinabung volcano that during our stay several times a day huge ash clouds uitbraakte. Spectacular. Please notice that you also have a thin rain or windbreaker with you. There is nothing here where you can take shelter if the weather turns.

If you find yourself in Berastagi, this is probably the reason you're here. The town itself is not all that, but the fairly easy trek to the top is definitely worthwhile, especially considering there ...  more »

Sibayak has a sister named Sinabung. Whenever Sinabung gets angry she spews ashes miles into the air. Berastagi town will be covered in ash.  more »

Where to stay in Berastagi

A broad range of accommodation abounds Berastagi, from the budget-friendly to mid-range to luxury end. Hotels and bed & breakfasts, as well as homestays for those seeking a stronger local flavor to their Berastagi holiday, sit both in the heart of town and close to the town's famed hiking trails. If you’re a light sleeper, avoid lodgings based along the main roads as these experience heavy traffic and subsequently a lot of noise pollution. Air-conditioning is not a standard in Berastagi accommodations, but the naturally cool climate of the region precludes the need for it.
