Mount Sibayak, Berastagi

(260+ reviews on the web)
Volcano
Climb to the top of Mount Sibayak for panoramic views of North Sumatra. Anyone of average fitness can manage the trek, which takes about five hours if you climb straight up, or a little longer if you set off through the jungle from a nearby waterfall. You can also take a minibus part of the way up the volcano if you prefer a shorter two-hour climb. At the summit of this stratovolcano is a small crater lake, colored bright green due to the sulfurous gases that seep into it. On the way down, take a dip in the hot springs. Wear sturdy shoes, bring warm clothes, and be prepared for sudden changes of weather. You won't need a guide unless you take the jungle route, but you may still wish to consider one if you are inexperienced or visiting alone.
