#1 of 798 in Nature in Indonesia
Adventure up an active (but quiet) volcano to see Ijen Crater. Take in the volcanic landscape as part of a tour, or travel independently in a rented jeep. The sulfur lake represents the main attraction of the otherworldly scenery, with its turquoise color and steam plumes. A spot for hikers to aim for, the crater attracts walkers, geologists, and photographers from all over the world who are drawn to the sheer topography of the environment and the mysterious aesthetics of its primary feature. • To visit absolutely! The Blue Fire are interesting and beautiful to look at, but what the place really deserves to be visited, is the activity of the miners extracting barehanded, without a mask, surrounded by poisonous fumes of sulfur. The transport is done manually and the miners carry everything on my shoulders. The weight is around 80 kg! Sulphur is paid to them 1000 IDR ...

  • Bought a local tour agency in Bali, next to the hotel for $120 per person. I must say that the volcano Tours offers many travel agents. The guided tour is not particularly seem to be rather we paid for support. ours stopped at 21:00 hotel (the driver missed the hour, Cork scary). We are very worried that we may not have time to climb the volcano at dawn. Then 4:00 from Legian we drove to the port. Then an hour on the ship to Java, together with an accompanying. In Java, the driver was already waiting for us with a car. We drove up to the foot of the volcano and handed over to the local guide who took us to the top. I must say, dress warm: warm coats, hats and gloves. On top of the very cold, strong wind in open space. And bring your flashlights, our guide was not equipped with them. Masks are not needed if the crater descend not going grey smells. Blue fire show we are not observed, there were only rare flashes. The guide told us that this phenomenon has been observed in August, keep in mind. And finally, we saw dawn and became Idzhen in all its glory. It is something fantastic, I haven't seen such beauty, as if you are on another planet. The spectacle is not forgotten. Such views are worth the sleepless night and heavy lifting.

  • Did not get to see blue flame but view along the way to Ijen summit was fascinating, let alone the blue lake. The 3km to crater should be an issue for those who are fit and exercising frequently. Be s...  more »

  • Got up really early for the mountain hike. It can be quite challenging if you're not fit enough but all my effort was worth it in the end because of the magnificent view. It was so beautiful I thought I was looking at computer generated photos. I was a little disappointed because the place was littered by some visitors. They should respect mother nature. We picked up some of the trash while we were on our way down.
  • We started hiking like many, at about 2 am. It's for everybody who want to see the blue fire. The hiking took 2-3 hours. Depends on your strenght. It took me 3, cause I brought two children, and I was not that strong (we made many stops). Hundreds people hiked that night, some brought musical instruments. So it's not boring at all. You need to bring your own flashlight to see the road. It's sometimes slippery or so hard, so wear that suitable shoes. This time, a lift service is available. For some hundred thousand rupiahs, someone will bring you up or down. Food or drink seller is available on the way up. They did not exagerate, the crater was just memorable. Don't forget to buy a nose cover. The sulphur smoke is sometimes annoying. I just enjoyed the blue fire from above. Don't have energy to get down from the top.
  • ⚡️How I (almost) passed out at the Ijen volcano⚡️. Anyone who wish to visit that volcano, I strongly recommend two months of intense training at the gym. I went without any preparation and still do not understand how I was able to climb up there. We walked at night, at about 3 o'clock and surprisingly, there were a lot of travellers who also chose this time in order to see a "blue fire" of a sulphur cloud, about which so much written on the Internet. In fact, what awaits you is a hike in pitch darkness, about 3,000 meters uphill (slope of 40+degrees) on the wet ground, then hellish descent to the volcano over the huge rocks and all of this for the sake of seeing the blue "fire" as from a tiny match. Also, the cloud that you see at the photo - covered us unexpectedly and in these seconds can overtake you unexpectedly. When it hit us - it was not possible to breathe or open eyes, we all fell to the ground and I thought "hope the wind soon will change direction or I will die," that's how toxic it was! (respiratory masks that we were given on the mountain, were rather sham, since they did not help at all). On my opinion, it will be more better to hike after sunrise as there will be less people, you actually can see where to step and with the sunrise, you can see the magnificent scenery. Here you can see world's largest acid lake of pure turquoise colour with the edges of the slopes covered with a yellow sulphuric crust. Under water - magma of a volcano. Since the depth and density of the water is too high, the magma remains locked at the bottom. The lake is a deadly, yet you can touch it by hand. The temperature on the surface is about 50-60 ° C, and in the depth - over 200 ° C. This place is equally attractive and dangerous. So get ready for it very carefully.
  • If you want to try hiking, this is the good place. And the blue fire is amazing. Dont forget to prepare your camera, water and snack. Its exhausting but it is really worth. If you feel weak there is taxi service to bring you up. But please prepare much money. Hehehe
  • The only Sulfur Di Oxide lake in the world, naturally occurring. The hike up-to the top of the mountain is arduous, keep patience, for when you reach the top, the view is breathtaking. Molten red sulfur, erupting from mother earth, and audacious miners mining it ! One of a kind experience...
