Bandung Zoo, Bandung

#9 of 13 in Outdoors in Bandung
Kebun Binatang Bandung is a 14ha zoo located in the city of Bandung in West Java, Indonesia known for its mistreatment and abuse of the animals that reside there. It was created in 1933 when two existing zoos in the city (Cimindi zoo and Dago Atas zoo) were combined and moved to the current location on Taman Sari street. The new zoo was located in "Jubileum Park", a botanical garden created in 1923 to celebrate the silver Jubilee of Queen Wilhelmina of the Netherlands. The zoo has garnered widespread negative publicity in recent years regarding its lack of proper animal care. The mayor of Bandung in 2015 stated that he did not possess the legal authority to close down the zoo, which is privately owned. Foreign tourists, as well as some locals, have described witnessing animals eating their own feces and other sights including visibly malnourished bears, deer with severe skin conditions, and animals shackled to the ground. As of January 2017, an online petition had received over 585,000 signatures asking the Ministry of Environment and Forestry (Indonesia) to close the zoo and re-locate the animals to a conservation or sanctuary.

  • This is a horrid place and does not deserve to be called a "zoo." Animals are in awful conditions, starving and so unhealthy, and are expected to live their lives like this. All people who care and support creatures on our planet need to call for the immediate release and relocation of these creatures to safe preserves where they may live out their lives in an environment conducive to their well-being. This Indonesian zoo in Bandung is a total disgrace and the people who run it and their government ought to be punished accordingly. Can you IMAGINE emaciated bears begging for food from people who go to this zoo? STOP going to this zoo. The circumstances are torturous for the zoo's inhabitants. The filth and squalor the animals are forced to survive in also forces them to wait for death to give them any relief. Beyond disgusting, this is abhorrent, reprehensible, inexcusable, indefensible and totally unjustifiable to treat these living creatures in such a cruel manner. This zoo must be closed.
  • Cig atulah, geura diperbaiki geurasi management-nya. Sedih siah ningali maung di Bandung bisa begang2 kitu. Kumaha Maung Bandung bisa menang jikalau maung yang hidup di dalamnya terbengkalai. Serupa tapi tak sama. Cerminan hidup manusia. Binatang juga mau makan. Binatang juga butuh disayang. Binatang juga aslinamah mbungeun dikurung mereun, komo teu dibere dahar, bari jeung jararomblo deui, ah! 😢
  • The place is wide and pretty clean, and shady with lots of trees. But the toilet. People just won't read the signs, guys getting into women's room, and vice versa. Other than that everything is good and lots of animal collections too.
