Dubdi Monastery, occasionally called Yuksom Monastery is a Buddhist monastery of the Nyingma sect of Tibetan Buddhism near Yuksom, in the Geyzing subdivision of West Sikkim district, in northeastern India. The Chogyar Namgyal established the first monastery known as the Dubdi Monastery in 1701, at Yuksom in Sikkim, which is part of Buddhist religious pilgrimage circuit involving the Norbugang Chorten, Pemayangtse Monastery, the Rabdentse ruins, the Sanga Choeling Monastery, the Khecheopalri Lake, and the Tashiding Monastery.Established in 1701, it is professed to be the oldest monastery in Sikkim and is located on the top of a hill which is about an hour's walk (3km) from Yuksom. It was also known as the Hermit's Cell after its ascetic founder Lhatsun Namkha Jigme, who along with two other lamas from Tibet met at Norbugang near Yuksom and crowned Phuntsog Namgyal as the first King or Chogyal of Sikkim at Norbugang Yuksom in 1642. The literal meaning of 'Dubdi' in local language is "the retreat".

  • It's a 300m hike to reach Dubdi Monastery. It was a quite place. There was some ritual going on when we visited the place. It was really a peace to sit inside the monastery.
  • Yuksom serves as a base camp interval for the Great Kanchenjunga climbers. Filled with religious ethics, the place is serene with calm and beauty. Nature is respected in this state the most; travellers do get a gist of these architecturally beautiful timber - load bearing monasteries and local houses. Pemayangtse, Tashiding and Khecheopalri are also places having historic stupas and monasteries, privileged spaces carved from the era of buddhism. Monasteries are beautiful sites one must visit. Having their own myths and memories which people have weaved for these places, reflects within their culture and approach! India is a country known for its diversity and here I m enjoying the one! Architecture of these monasteries and local houses is something of great importance. These places have been extensively documented in forms of drawings and photographs, archived at KRVIA library.
  • Budda temple
  • One can enjoy the trek from Yuksom to dubdi monastery by under-construction motorable road but we found a short cut at the time of return which save time and reduce journey by one third. It is an oldest monastery in sikim.
  • Very peaceful place! must go.
