Prakasam Barrage, Vijayawada
(4.4/5 based on 90+ reviews on the web)
The structure of the Prakasam Barrage stretches 1223.5 m across the Krishna River connecting Krishna and Guntur districts. The barrage serves also as a road bridge and spans over a lake. The three canals associated with the barrage run through the city of Vijayawada crossing it and giving it a Venetian appearance. The idea of constructing a dam across the river Krishna dates back to 1798. It began in the hands of captain Buckle and was revised in 1839 and 1841 by captain Best and captain Lake. After the endorsement of Major Cotton, the board of Directors of East India Company approved it on 5 January 1850. The dam was started in 1852 and completed in 1855. Later, the State Government constructed a bridge that was named after Tanguturi Prakasam, the first Chief Minister of Andhra (A State formed in 1953, which later became Andhra Pradesh in 1956 after the merger of Telugu speaking districts of former Hyderabad State). Completed in 1957 it helps irrigating over 1.2 million acres of land. This barrage also supplies water to Buckingham canal which was constructed as inland navigation canal initially but later used as irrigation water supply canal. One of the first major irrigation projects of South India, the Prakasam Barrage in Vijayawada was completely successful in its mission.Andhra Pradesh largely owes its rich agriculture to the Prakasam dam as the project facilitated the irrigation of large tracts of farmland. The dam provides views of the lake. It has become a tourist attraction of Vijayawada. Barrage has total 76 pillars in total, 70 pillars belongs to Guntur district and 6pillars belongs to Krishna district.

  • You can enjoy the beauty only in morning , can go for a jog to have better ambience and enjoy the nature, after 9am the road is very busy ,you can't see much
  • Old but very attractive in evening and night. Government made some lighting on the bridge.Which is looking a bridal effect for the bridge on the holy river Krishna.Must See during Vijayawada visit.

  • A visit to the barrage turned out to be quite exciting and worth its name as we had gone there in the thick of the monsoon when the gates had to be opened occasionally to let the excess water flow out. The place is very picturesque with lots of statues of various deities all around. The resort there is really relaxing and enchanting and worth a stay. surroundings are so neat, green and clean, that one feels rejuvenated and peaceful. It felt great and a bit frightening to see so much water all around. Water had spilled into the adjoining villages because of the opening of the gates and created a flood like situation.
  • Compared to earlier there is definitely progress seen in Vijayawada with slow development. Near prakasam barrage pedestrian path is laid for walkers to spend time and get fresh feel of air of the surrounding water. It has become a break point for the people from their daily hectic work. Other side of the bridge is the capital city Amravati of Andhra Pradesh. It is long way to go till the city take shape of a capital. In my view the place where the barrage is constructed is quite unbelievable. Reason, the breadth is too long and I am wondering how long the bridge could resist to the water force which will be much higher to the bridge tolerance. It is definitely a miracle or the technology adopted by the British India at that time is surely unique. You can find my snap with label as KARMS on top
