Kanaka Durga Temple, Vijayawada
(4.7/5 based on 280 reviews on the web)
Perched on Indrakeeladri hill on the banks of River Krishna, Kanaka Durga Temple makes a popular Hindu pilgrimage center. Dating back to the 8th century, the shrine to Goddess Durga ranks as the second-largest temple in Andhra Pradesh. The spot provides an excellent view of the city, the river, Gandhi Hill, the huge Prakasam barrage, and Bhavani Island. Inside the temple, ornamented with bright flowers, a 1.2 m high (4 ft) icon of the deity holds a powerful weapon in each of her eight arms, piercing the demon Mahishasura with her trident. • Not only is the temple itself beautiful, with its golden pagoda and intricately carved gopurams, the surrounding environment is gorgeous. Full of life, and spirit. Just the way a temple should be.
