Jalakandeswarar Temple, Vellore
(4.6/5 based on 100+ reviews on the web)
Located inside a fortification, visit Jalakandeswarar Temple which honors Lord Shiva. Admire the architectural ornaments dating back to the reign of King Sadasivadeva Maharaya (1540 - 1572 AD) with intricate carvings on the 30 m (100 ft) tall tower and the heavy wooden door. Enjoy the atmosphere inside the temple where the hall stands supported by pillars of stone with carved horses, lion like beasts, and even dragons. Make a wish and place your hands on the earthen lamp behind the statue of the bull of Lord Shiva; if the lamp revolves, your wish will come true. • The temple is one of the most important attractions in the Vellore fort complex. The template wall is made of a regular cut stones having sculpture on these. The sculptures are not up to the sculpture of khajuraho or Konark temple but sensible enough for the temple environment. There are many idols of God and Goddesses but Shiva Linga is considered the main. For visiting and praying in most formal way, morning is the time but I feel afternoon and evening times are good enough for visiting and observation the whole temple as the crowd is less in this time. Light in the darkness gives another beauty to the temple environment.
