(220+ reviews on the web)
Religious Site Tourist Spot
Located on a tabletop-shaped hill, Janardhana Swami Temple represents a jewel of Keralan architecture. Embark on the moderately difficult climb up the stairs to the top of the hill, where you'll see the richly colored gate to the temple. Admire the two idols that guard the gate and proceed into the beautifully built and decorated site, where you'll find another idol of Sri in the main shrine. Take a break after the hike by the temple’s pond and well, which brims with clear water. You can’t take photographs inside the temple, but you can take plenty of great snaps from the outside. For travelers who use our custom trip planner, Varkala holidays become easier to arrange, with trips to the Janardhana Swami Temple and other attractions mapped out and timetabled.

  • One of the Abhimana sthalangal of Mahavishnu. Presiding Lord is Janardhana swami. Many other dieties are found in the temples. Forigners and non Hindus are allowed insive this Government/Travacore Devasom Board controlled temple. Araat is the main festival held in around April where the lord is taken on procession on elephant. The temple pond has medicinal values. There is a natural freshwater source for drinking , bath and wash opening into the pond . This spring acts as a constant water source for the pond as well as keeping the water clean by its regular uninterupted water flow. Varkala has a excellent beach called Papanasam beach which is considered very holy and Bali Dharpanam day is very auspcious here. The cliff and beach are a fabulos sight attracting tourists from all over the world. Varkala is a big town and Taluq Headquarters with all amenities Hotels , BusTerminal , supermarkets Police Station etc .. The Varkala Railway station connects the international airport at Trivandrum-TRV 50kms away .
  • My experiences of this place were mixed as they do not share my feelinfs of religious tolerance. Only hindus are allowed into this place which is not conversant with my idea of religion. As a place its a beautiful temple on top of a small hill.

  • A really old temple that's preserved well. The place is really peaceful and has a calming influence. If you're a guy, they insist you take off your shirt.
