Janardhana Swami Temple, Varkala

(4.5/5 based on 220+ reviews on the web)
Located on a tabletop-shaped hill, Janardhana Swami Temple represents a jewel of Keralan architecture. Embark on the moderately difficult climb up the stairs to the top of the hill, where you'll see the richly colored gate to the temple. Admire the two idols that guard the gate and proceed into the beautifully built and decorated site, where you'll find another idol of Sri in the main shrine. Take a break after the hike by the temple’s pond and well, which brims with clear water. You can’t take photographs inside the temple, but you can take plenty of great snaps from the outside. For travelers who use our custom trip planner, Varkala holidays become easier to arrange, with trips to the Janardhana Swami Temple and other attractions mapped out and timetabled.

  • The tour starts at 17: 00. Down the steps, left his shoes in lockers, you'll get them back against 5 rupees. In the stairs first, on your right, a person waiting for you, you give 10 rupees by people. For that amount, you have the right to enter the temple at the top of the market, but also in a firecrackers by people to signal your arrival. In the temple, or rather the temple courtyard, buildings, sculptures, offerings,... brief gilding a silent, quiet place. We were able to enter the temple (forbidden to non indouistes) because an Indian asked for us a man responsible for the entrance to the temple. We had his agreement. For women nothing to do in the outfit, but for men must be torso naked. However in the temple photos are prohibited and the silence is required. In the Court the photos it is possible. Of course it must scrupulously respect these rules. A visit you forget. Too bad for all these corners garbage around the temple that deserves a nice environment. It takes about an hour to enjoy this place. You can return on the offerings of Varkala Beach which is less than a 10 minute walk and amount will go to the Cliff.

  • Janardana Swami Temple is one of oldest and famous temples in kerala nearly 2000 years old situated near the Varkala beach. The presiding deity of this temple is Sri Janarthana Swami. Janardana Swami is a form of Lord Vishnu. There is a very strict rule in dress code, for men. Every year, a ten-day festival with Arattu is conducted on the Malayalam month of Meenam (may be march or april)on the day of Uthram. which is a most popular festivals in south kerala. Over all it is very beautiful ambience .
  • Located close to the Papanasam beach, Janardhana Swamy temple is probably one of the oldest temples in Kerala, around 2000-yr old. Also known as Varkala temple, it has Janardhana Swami, a form of Lord Vishnu as the resident deity. The standing statue of the deity faces towards east with his raised right hand in ‘Aachamanam’ position. The main idol has four arms holding chakra (wheel), shanghu (holy conch shell), kumbham (pot) and gada (mace). The sanctorum entrance has other bright looking idols of Garuda, Lord Shiva, Hanumana and other gods and goddesses. The present structure of Kerala’s prime religious site dates back to the 12th century. It does not only has a religious importance but is also known for its spectacular architectural beauty. On the entrance of the circular sanctum sanctorum, there is an old banyan tree as well. The square-shaped Mandapa (pavilion) has Navagaraha (nine planets) carved on its ceilings. All around the year, this temple is visited by Hindu devotees to perform final rites for the deceased in their families. Every year, the temple becomes the venue of a 10-day Arattu festival in the Meenam month (March-April).
  • A really old temple that's preserved well. The place is really peaceful and has a calming influence. If you're a guy, they insist you take off your shirt.
  • Nice peaceful place. Liked the walls adorned with lamps all over. As usual strict rules for gents in dress code
  • A temple for Lord Vishnu, main festival is Arattu which is conducted on the Malayalam month of Meenam on the day of Uthram
